But the question is whether should we as consumers start weaning of soya bean meal as the base protein source for our food system? As prices of soya in the market currently is at such affordable price. Our recent investigation maybe soya could be substituted with macro algae as soya bean meal price could average out at 397.51 USD per tonne, while tropical macro algae (Spinosium) has an average market price for 350USD per tonne. So the economical question of raw material price should be answered on which might be a better choice.
The amount of soya coming into the EU as feed via the port of Rotterdam is real to feed our insatiable appetite for animal products. And it only takes an average of 2 to 3 weeks to clear a storage facility of a capacity of 10,000 tonnes. Just imagine the damage that is done to the environment.
