The Box+

Waste not, want not. Make the most of what we’ve got.

A system comprised of a composter, in home gardening, and access to a network of gardeners providing fresh produce for quality compost.

Use Case

As a working mother of 4, Amy lack the income necessary to purchase produce and has limited time to garden at home. Instead of turning to conventional processed foods, Amy chooses to purchase The Box+, which connects her with Megan, a local master gardener. In exchange for household compost, Megan provides Amy and her family with high quality produce. In addition to this partnership, Amy utilizes the small home gardening system provided with The Box+. This straightforward approach to home gardening requires minimal time commitment allowing Amy to effectively produce a small harvest to supplement her families produce consumption. The food waste generated from the additional produce is returned to the composter, which can be used as fertilizer for future growing seasons.

Potential

The Box+ is a multifaceted solution to the multifaceted food security problem that targets waste culture in today’s society at an individual level. This will not only utilize waste and encourage home food cultivation; it will make the global community conscious of excessive food waste and its role in food security. Our concept will create a shift in perspective through education from active involvement in food production and waste management. The Box+ provides a solution that aims to ease the problem, by actively changing perspectives and actions now and for generations to come.

Business Case

The Box+ Company would require minimal production and material costs resulting in a vertically integrated business model, which allows for expansion in order to increase global impact. This system is not only affordable; it is easy to use, self-contained, and aesthetically pleasing, making it both marketable and scalable. With success our open-ended concept could expand in various directions, continuing to attack the problem on multiple fronts. For instance, additional crop starter kits, more educational materials, and an expanded compost network could augment our concept. These additional avenues allow for continuous development and scalability of our concept as a business.

Objectives:

  1. Up to 40% of the world’s food is wasted; The Box transforms this lost resource into a key part of a sustainable waste recovery system.
  2. Link gardeners seeking quality compost to families without access to produce, creating communities focused on health and food security.
  3. Engage families in the food production cycle through the integration of household compost and straightforward home food cultivation.
