Energy through Algal Nutraceuticals

An innovative process which makes an Algae based balanced nutrition source at affordable rates for all.

Use Case

Shyam Sundar and his family are one of the many families who lost everything in the tsunami that hit India recently. W.H.O. reaches out to them with packets of CHI as a food source, free of cost. The family feeds on it and survives this calamity and goes on being stronger due to the balanced diet provided by CHI. Akshay is an aspiring actor who wants to maintain a fit body. He chooses the high protein version of CHI due to its high content of amino acids and b-carotene, and its anti carcinogenic properties. Hera Lal is a cattle herder who wants to feed his stock with bare minimum expenses. He reaches out to The Promising Seed to give him a completely balanced dietary plan involving CHI for his cattle. CHI therefore has the potential to serve both the poor and rich.

Potential

To reduce the pressure on land and water bodies from agriculture, livestock and fishing. Currently, Algae is being targeted by biotech industries for food supplements and other pharmaceutical products, whereas the vast potential of algae to act as a dietary substituent is still untapped. This industry would provide a balanced diet at very low cost. The utilization of alternate substituent to generate non arable foods. This industry would provide an employment opportunity for algal cultivation to the unskilled labour across the world.Utilization of Carbon dioxide from industries. The potential to serve the poor and malnourished. This industry has the power to act as a solution to world hunger.

Business Case

Tie up with health care organizations, which provide relief services to poverty and disaster stricken areas can be forged to supply them with algal food relief packages. Over time these products will be permanently included into the diets of these regions, and set up a stable market. Such ties with mass distribution of products at cheap rates will have minimum profits. To generate revenue, high value nutrient supplements obtained from same process can be sold at higher prices. Algae based fillers can be supplied to food and beverage manufactures to increase the nutritional value of their product and in turn gain profits. Algae based cattle and fish feed can be marketed as healthy source of nutrition to generate revenue.CO2 can be taken in from industries in exchange of valuable carbon cred

Objectives:

  1. To the Future: To develop an alternate food substituent through a sustainable process without putting pressure on existing resources.
  2. To feed the poor: To provide a balanced nutrition easily affordable to the under privileged.
  3. To promote a non-conventional food substituent: Promote a new form of safer and nutritive food that is Algae.

ALGAL NUTRACEUTICALS PRODUCTION PROCESS OVERVIEW

*The carbon dioxide required for the optimum growth of algae can be obtained from industries in exchange of valuable carbon credits.

*The algae harvested from the open ponds are sent to a spray drier system using hot air currents for complete removal of water and the conversion of the product into powder form.

*A cyclone separator and a bag filter are also provided in the spray drier system to ensure that en-trained algae are not carried along with the emission air.

*The algae are then further sent to a decolorizer where they are made into a colorless powder using chemicals such as ethanol.

Algae Providing Balanced Diet

After having found the nutrition to be provided for the perfect balanced diet, we researched various products which can provide this at a minimum possible cost.
Algae was found to be the most suitable one.
We combined the use of two algaes:
Spirulina
Chollera Vulgaris

Both them can be cultivated separately and mixed together in the powdered form to provide a balance diet.

During our research for an alternate food source, the most important thing we found was providing a balanced diet to the consumers.
For that we first researched the nutrient composition of a balanced diet and found that a balanced diet contains:
Carbohydrates 55-65%
Fats 25-30%
Proteins 10-15%

Our Mission

The challenge of feeding 9 to 10 Billion people by 2050 may seem like a big enough challenge in itself, but we also need to achieve this feat whilst, at the same time, reducing adverse impacts of food production on a whole range of ecosystem services. Our way is ‘‘sustainable intensification’’ which entails delivering safer, nutritious food from the same area whilst maintaining ecosystem service provision. Our mission is to develop Alternative methods of production and processing of food along with development of substitutes, which will reduce the pressure on land and water bodies from agriculture, livestock and fishing. Our pathway shall provide relief to the poor and also to the people affected in droughts, famines

Our Background

Our team consists of members pursuing Chemical engineering in the final year as well students in MBA course. We are participating so that we can take our ideas on a global level and thus help the society by expanding our project. The students of Chemical Engineering have innovated ideas and done research projects on substitute of the conventional food while the students of MBA course are working with best possible ways of marketing, distribution, so that nobody goes hungry to bed. Thus the mixture in our team shall contribute to food security at its best
