BasketBowl

Love your food. Eat it, Share it, Don't waste it.

BasketBowl is a mobile app for students that acts as a pantry manager & reminder to use or share food before it spoils to prevent food waste

Use Case

Gaby is studying far away from home. She loves cooking and does her grocery shopping twice a week. Sometimes she forgets what she has in her fridge. By the time she remembers, the food has spoiled and cannot be eaten anymore. She always feels bad about wasting food. BasketBowl can help ease Gaby's guilty conscience. After grocery shopping, she can input her purchases in to the app, including their “good” before dates. BasketBowl will remind her about the food 2 days before the date with 2 options: cook it with help from the “find recipe” feature or put it in "Basket". Other students can then view her "Basket" and ask to share or trade food. As a BasketBowl user, Gaby will no longer be worried about wasting food.

Potential

Food waste means, energy that was put into growing the food was wasted. If we can help reduce the amount of food wasted in our homes, we are helping the environment.BasketBowl helps users in a specific community (university’s students) prevent food waste. The University helps establish an initial user base. This ensures that users will have access to other users to swap with locally. Hopefully It will lead to interactions between bright minds of students who care about food waste. The app helps users to be informed on food spoilage. As awareness increases, we hope to increase influence to more universities.

Business Case

BasketBowl is a mobile app for students at a selected university, to help them prevent wasting food. It can be downloaded for free at the apps store. BasketBowl will start up partnering with a particular university. This ensures a pool of users who are available to connect and meet. The developing of the apps are voluntary. As none of the founders are developers, this task must be outsourced or worked on with a new partner. Future revenue streams will be from ads in the apps store.

Objectives:

  1. Reduce food waste by helping users manage their groceries stock
  2. Raise awareness of how food spoils and show how much is wasted uneccesarily
  3. Promote social exchange of like-minded people at University

What is behind 8oz (≈ 250g) steak? / Published November 4, 2014 by Amelinda Angela

What is behind 8oz (≈ 250g) steak?

When a 8-oz steak is wasted, the real thing is 6.5lbs (≈ 3kg) wheat and 1200gal (≈ 4500l) water are also being wasted. Think twice before #foodwaste!

Our Mission

Someone once said that we never know the worth of water till the well is dry. Well in our team, we refuse to wait for the well to dry! We stand for revolution in looking at food waste! For us, it is not waste, it is a world of possibilities, and our mission is to restore it its value. Hundreds of tons of food are lost or wasted globally, every year, and even if just one-fourth of this food could be saved, we would have enough to feed more than 800 million hungry people. We will not let anyone else keep suffering the consequences of this, and we will continue working everyday to make sure that all the resources we obtain from nature are treated with the respect they deserve.

Our Background

We are three Master students of the Erasmus Mundus Master of Food Innovation and Product Design. We love to eat food and hate wasting it. Food security is an issue that concerns our future world and we want to be an active part of the solution to ensure that we can feed the world.
