FreshSpire

Don’t perspire over what’s expired, get FreshSpired!

FreshSpire is a mobile notification system connecting grocers with consumers, by alerting consumers of discounts on foods nearing shelf-life

Use Case

Sad Susan is a health conscious shopper on a budget. She would like to purchase nutritious produce but it is frequently too expensive. Luckily FreshSpire is here to help! Through the use of text messages and FreshSpire’s interactive mobile application, users can search for markdowns on near-expiring produce, meats, and breads at nearby grocery stores. The unique scrolling newsfeed that we implement makes it efficient and user friendly. Through use of the app, consumers save time by avoiding the hassle of searching for the best deals within an area. Additionally, users can keep track of expiration dates on products in their households through the expiration date calendar on the app.

Potential

Our product starts small, with just one independent grocery store. But with proof of a growing customer base we will move into more and more grocery chains with an exponential outreach effect. With every grocery store breached, we will reach hundreds of consumers seeking discount produce, and thus minimize the amount of food going unsold (and being wasted). This snowball effect will sweep the nation and eventually be an international practice. PEW Research Center estimated that 90% of Americans own a cell phone and that number is growing, meaning our addressable market is also growing. FreshSpire can change the world with each new customer reached and each produce item saved from the landfill; FreshSpire will feed the world by redirecting food from being wasted to being eaten.

Business Case

FreshSpire’s app and text notifications are free for all users. Consumers sign up for a text message alerts or download the mobile app. Users can set up filters for the types of notifications they want to receive. For the grocer, the product is risk free. We gain revenue through a 20% commission on the food sold due to FreshSpire. We are able to track the number of FreshSpire users that walk through the stores every day through iBeacon technology. By increasing foot traffic, FreshSpire boosts the bottom line for grocers. According to the UN World Food Program, the number one cause of hunger is poverty, followed by investment in agriculture. Through donating part of our revenue to fund microfinancing initiatives for farmers in other countries, FreshSpire targets both of these causes.

Objectives:

  1. Feed People- FreshSpire will expand access to discounted food and combat ineffective food distribution for many socioeconomic classes.
  2. Reduce Food Waste- Liquidating produce inventories prior to expiration will diminish food travelling to landfills and reduce excess.
  3. Promote Healthy Eating Habits-Spreading FreshSpire’s mission will encourage others on the importance of consuming nutritious foods.

Our Mission

FreshSpire Incorporated aspires to diminish gaps in effective food distribution, to make healthier food available at affordable prices for members of socioeconomic groups, and to decrease food waste at the grocery store and household levels. Our team stands for innovation, and we believe our product can bring social change for the better.

Our Background

The FreshSpire team wants to make a huge difference in the community in terms of nutrition and the environment. We were astounded when we learned of how much food is wasted daily in a grocery store, and how many of our community members were food insecure. We put our heads together and hope to bring FreshSpire to the FFT Challenge. This challenge will offer the guidance, advice, and connections needed for FreshSpire to become a reality. We care about feeding all socioeconomic backgrounds healthily and affordably. While our hometowns span North Carolina, we met in Durham at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and have pursued the idea since seniors year. Here's a little bit about each of us: Jennifer Wu- President; attends University of Pennsylvania; Freshman; from Cary, NC Shraddha Rathod- Chief Financial Officer (CFO); attends North Carolina State University; Freshman; from Charlotte, NC Mona Amin- Secretary; attends East Carolina University; Freshman; from Charlotte, NC Gabrielle Beaudry- Chief Marketing Officer (CMO); attends the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Freshman; from Concord, NC Hannah Sloan- Chief Technical Officer (CTO); attends the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Freshman; from New Bern, NC
