Use Case

Our objective is to make WASTEMATE a global phenomenon. WASTEMATE has been designed for users at every level of the value chain to help them preserve food (home, retailers and producers). It provides innovative, ecofriendly and affordable solution. The dehydrator has vast scope, working on solar, wind and hydro power. Meat, vegetables and fruits can be dehydrated; scraps for animal feed and solid food for human consumption. The thermoelectric cooler works on solar energy and will store items that can’t be dehydrated. Users are given ample choice in selecting how to preserve their food. The WASTEMATE App is a free app to be made available on SMARTPHONES platforms to equip people with knowledge of how to save food on an individual level. WASTEMATE is designed to be a people’s project.

Potential

DEHYDRATOR-The dehydrator can operate on solar, wind and hydro power. It will be used for two purposes: The solid perishable food will be dehydrated and used for human consumption. Food scraps will be dehydrated and used as animal feed. Hence all kinds of food waste have been addressed.THERMOELECTRIC COOLER-The thermoelectric cooler is very low cost and can be used in off the grid places with solar energy. Food items that cannot be dehydrated will be stored at low temperatures.WASTEMATE APP-The WASTEMATE APP is a part of our community awareness program that equips people with food saving techniques at individual level with a food kit, food recipes, urban agriculture and food facts.

Business Case

An average household wastes £700 worth of food a year. Our dehydrator and cooler cost far lesser. That money and more can be saved at a very low initial cost. The investment recovery time will be a couple of months. We propose to produce both products at a large-scale to reduce costs. We will promote the products through partnerships with eco-engineering companies.By using sustainable energy, we can keep running costs low.We realize that we have a social responsibility towards the world. WASTEMATE APP is a step in that direction aimed at educating people about food saving techniques free of cost.As the company expands, we will increase accessibility to our products by pro bono work. We will provide both products free of cost, to a certain percentage of small farmer and retailers

Objectives:

  1. To reduce food waste on all levels of the value chain using unique and innovative methods and feed 9 billion people by 2050.
  2. To use cutting edge technology to develop efficient and eco-friendly products to preserve food worldwide.
  3. To create awareness about the current scenario and discourage food wastage in the future by educating about food preservation methods.

THE JOURNEY !! / Published December 6, 2014 by Husanpreet Singh Sandhu

THE JOURNEY !!

Team Innovera's TFF journey has been nothing short of amazing. We began with a three member power team and a completely different idea. After going through various work modes of the Design Lab, countless meetings, hours of brainstorming and innumerable cups of coffee, we had our Eureka moment. WASTEMATE began taking shape. At this point of time we were lucky to be joined by our fourth team mate who helped us take our idea to the next level. Then began the real work. We realized that time is of essence and redoubled our efforts. During the course of the past two months, there were times when we felt dejected, got laid back and second guessed ourselves. These were trying times which we overcame and bounced back with renewed energy levels. We learned new softwares like Google Sketchup and iMovie. We honed our video making skills and reached out to professionals for help. We spoke to our professors, biotechnologists and power electronics researchers to give our project the necessary edge. The research involved in this project was tremendous. We learnt alot more than
we had previously anticipated. Our project took over our thoughts and priority. The objective is not just to win the challenge but to actually find a viable solution and make a difference. WASTEMATE is an expression of our ideology and thought process. It is our bid to leave a mark on the world.

Our food DEHYDRATOR! / Published December 6, 2014 by devina aggarwal

Our food DEHYDRATOR!

Indians have dehydrated their food since time immemorial to preserve it. Taking a leaf out of our age old traditions we have developed a dehydrated. What makes our dehydrator unique is the fact that it can be customized to work on wind and hydro energy apart from solar energy. We realized that in certain countries up north, wind and hydro energy is more easily available than solar energy. Our dehydrator can be used to dehydrate meat, vegetables and fruits. Anything that is at a risk of getting spoilt can be dehydrated to increase its shelf life. Food scraps can be dehydrated and used as organic animal feed because food saved is food produced!

WASTE STATISTICS / Published December 6, 2014 by devina aggarwal

WASTE STATISTICS

We waste 1/3rd of the food we produce. It is this excessive wastage that hinders feeding 9 billion people by 2050. WASTEMATE aims to tackle this issue and hence find a comprehensive solution to feed the future.

Our Mission

We sleep with a belly full of food every night, have committed the sin of gluttony and thrown whole boxes of food simply because it wasn't tasty enough. But we realize that there are those who go hungry every night because they don't have access to food or because there isn't enough food in their nation. Our mission is to provide the 9 billion people on this planet in 2050 with food security. It is our objective to use our skills and ideas to find a way to feed even those who don't have access to food today.

Our Background

It has been predicted that in 2050 India will have the largest population in the world. We are a group of Indian students endeavouring to contribute to the issue of world security in year 2050. When the world sees an unprecedented population boom, we want to have an action plan in place to feed not only the indian but the world at large. This is the reason why we wish to participate in this challenge.
