Use Case

Sarah wants to find an effective way to help the hungry, and would like to contribute in a way that addresses the root cause of food insecurity, and will continue to proliferate and be self-sustaining.Sarah finds out about Happy Chickens through a friend, and becomes educated on the potential of rural chickens. She shares the site with a few friends and makes a financial contribution. Not only did the website give Sarah a way to contribute, but also turns her into an advocate for sharing her new found knowledge with all her friends. The increased exposure and funding helps Newcastle vaccination programs expand into regions that are still lacking the education and distributional infrastructure.

Potential

It is uncertain how effective direct aid is as a solution in addressing food insecurity, since the situation regresses to its previous state once aid is stopped. Increasing the production of rural poultry may be a more sustainable solution. Newcastle disease is the limiting factor of rural poultry. Vaccination programs increase poultry production by training locals to be paid vaccinators. The systems created are locally-based and self-perpetuating, but the establishment of these programs are limited by a lack of funding.Happy Chickens explains the potential of rural poultry and benefits of Newcastle vaccination to those in the first world looking for a way to contribute. By directing first world funds into sustainable cause, the goal of global food security can be met faster.

Business Case

A significant amount of time that was put into the research and creation of the website, Facebook page, and videos. However, the fruits of our knowledge are freely available to anyone who wishes to learn more about how vaccinating village poultry against Newcastle Disease can help address food insecurity. All materials were made to be easily understandable, user friendly, and easily shared. We hope that our contribution provides a way to increase awareness and funding of Newcastle vaccination programs.

Objectives:

  1. Educate and spread awareness of village poultry and Newcastle vaccination.
  2. Increase funding for organizations involved in Newcastle vaccination programs.
  3. Generate interest and empower others to come up with their own solutions for improving poultry production and food insecurity.
