Automated robotic weed elimination to increase crop yields

SurveyBot is an agricultural robot that saves farmers money by automatically finding & spraying herbicides on weeds only, not crops.

Use Case

Joe is a farmer, his costs are high and his yields are low because of weeds in his field. He already spends a lot of money on herbicides to deal with the weeds. Joe currently blanket sprays his crops with herbicides, thereby wasting a lot of the chemicals on crops. SurveyBot solves this problem, by going through the farm and automatically recognizing the weed species present, and SurveyBot sprays only the weeds, not the crop. This significantly reduces the amount of herbicide Joe needs to use. SurveyBot also allows for the use of different herbicides on the same species of weed, eliminating the weeds more effectively and mitigating the risk of resistance. Now instead of paying someone to spray his whole crop, Joe just sends SurveyBot out to automatically find and stop weeds for him.

Potential

Weeds can reduce crop yields by over 50%, they reduce crop quality, contaminate harvests, and increase the risk of insect and disease damage. American farmers spend more than $15 billion a year on herbicides to kill weeds. SurveyBot will save farmers thousands of dollars on herbicides by only spraying the weeds in their fields, not crops. The robot will also reduce the incidence of herbicide resistance by allowing different types of herbicides to be used on the same species of weed. SurveyBot will also reduce labour costs since it is automated. Finally, once we begin to gather large amounts of data on the types and numbers of weeds on farms, we’ll provide this data to agrochemical companies, like Syngenta, to predict what products farmers need and potentially forecast emerging resistance.

Business Case

We will sell the robots and earn recurring revenue from licensing the software to farmers. ‎At scale, we will be able to sell data on the types and numbers of weeds in farmers' fields to agrochemical companies so that they can better forecast farmers’ product needs and potentially predict emerging resistance.As our database of weed occurrence expands, we’ll be able to cover more crops and more geographic areas, expanding our client base. Additionally, we will eventually be able to cover pests and diseases, further improving crop yields, saving farmers more money and providing more data for agrochemical companies.Our team is well equipped to make SurveyBot successful. We’re a team of three from Canada with experience in startups, biology, robotics, machine learning and computer vision

Our Background

We’re a team of three from York University. Charu Jaiswal has a biology background and has won numerous awards, such as the Killam Fulbright Fellowship and she is a Studio Y Fellow at the MaRS discovery district in Toronto, one of the world’s largest innovation hubs. Ragavan is a computer engineer who previously co-founded a company using machine learning software for image recognition and was selected by The Next 36 as one of Canada’s top young innovators. Ragavan also has a love of robotics, having created several robots and even going so far as to design and organize robotics competitions voluntarily. Finally, Phillip is a geomatics engineer who has experience with GIS, remote sensing and navigation algorithms. We’ve always had a secret love for farming, it runs in our families.
