EcoPel

Your one-stop solution to green fishing.

EcoPel is an affordable organic pellet which enhances pond ecosystem allowing increased fish production from root level and beyond.

Use Case

Ronjon Halder, a fisherman, owns a pond with two of his brothers. They work every day, but makes profit which is barely enough to feed their families 2 meals a day. When asked, he pointed out expensive fish feed for use and imbalanced chemical fertilizers that harms fishes as it leads to eutrophication. Besides, the ammonia released by fish causes higher fish mortality rate and needs to be cleared regularly after every 6 months adding huge cost. But what can he do? No green alternative. So, here is Team EcoPel with a revolutionary product which ensures affordable organic pellets that can be used as a surface for fish feed to grow; absorbing agent of ammonia and catalyst for increasing food production.

Potential

Our idea indicates huge potential as it is easy to implement in any area where sugarcane bagasse and manure are available. In Bangladesh, there are 21 sugar mills spreading all over the country ensuring the convenience of acquiring raw material. Moreover, our idea can also be positioned on a global scale especially in countries which focus on food security through fishing. EcoPel would come handy to any fisherman across the globe to increase fish production with minimum effort leading to maximum outcome. Our product is especially recommendable for semi-intensive aquaculture (e.g. ponds). If all semi-commercial and sub consistent fish farmers used a pack of pellet at least once then the market size of our entire venture is $ 72 Million.

Business Case

EcoPel introduces an organic product that integrates 3 major solutions in form of pellets for green fishing. The business model requires use of agricultural waste to produce the pellets and selling to target buyers through retailers. Locally available raw materials - sugarcane bagasse and manure will be used and sold in packet of 60 pellets weighing about a kilogram. Hence, ensuring a profit margin of 50% from each pellet which will be still significantly less than currently available products and method. This business requires an initial investment of $45,000 with an IRR of 23%. By using Ecopel, small-hold fish farmers will be benefited the most since this product will save time, money and effort resulting in increased fish productivity. This will provide food security from root level.

Objectives:

  1. Empowering small hold fish farmers by providing an affordable integrated tool that increases fish production by at least 30%.
  2. Encouraging more involvement in the fishing sector through greater return on investment and creating sustainable platform for growth.
  3. Ensuring food security through improved small-scale aqua culture throughout Asia.

WE DID IT!!

From brainstorming to product development - TFF and its design lab made it more easy-going and exciting for Team EcoPel. As a team, we believe ensuring safe food to every human is a mammoth task yet dreaming big shall never be ceased.
Our team enjoys working with bottom of pyramid since they are the ones who need us - they need food security at most. And we came up with this idea with a view to helping out from root level. Distress in fishing community can be reduced to great extent if they are introduced with an integrated solution to green fishing. EcoPel envisions the day when fishermen won't need to worry much about fish mortality and insufficient productivity. A smiling fisherman is all we expect to see.

Team EcoPel signing off by expressing gratitude to TFF team for rendering a global platform to grow and showcase their idea- DREAM.

How the product works!!

Our pellet will float in the surface of the water for the first 7 days which is allow itself as the surface for zooplanktons and phytoplanktons to grow which acts as fish feed and after while getting dissolved it sucks in all the ammonia and ultimately it gets dissolved acting as an organic fertilizer. :D

We are using local people cause in Bangladesh they have this thing that they trust only the ones they know personally and moreover if we recruit from the locality they will know who are the fish farmers and how to position EcoPel in their minds. Our Pellet!!

The size and shape and a simple idea about what we are going to sell

Our Mission

To provide affordable, sustainable and eco-friendly pellets for fish production to ensure food security in every household.

Our Background

EcoPel is the brainchild of four aspiring business students from Bangladesh. It all started from an assignment on fishing industry where we came across the real picture of small-hold fishermen in this country. The inconvenience and the inefficiency in fish production has resulted in less productivity and thus, food insecurity in rural areas. Contacting to few fishermen from Narina, in Sirajgonj, Bangladesh, paved us the way to address their problems. After intensive research and with the help of people from respective specialized sectors, we came up with EcoPel which was highly lauded by our honorable faculty. This encouraged us to take this dream further and work on it. Now EcoPel in is the idea stage with adequate resources to move on to its pilot stage with a view to presenting an innovation in fishing industry and ensure food security to millions.
