The target consumer were looking at is a young professional in his 20’s that doesn’t have time to make a meal or has no intention of making one. 28% of males and 18% of females 18-34 miss a meal every single day. Our product is an easy to use cricket based chocolate flavored meal replacement powder that can be mixed in water, milk or any liquid the user prefers. It has plenty of calories, protein, O-mega 3s and iron to replace a meal when they are too busy or just don’t feel like creating a meal. Our product is for people on the go and in need of sustenance to carry them throughout the day. Not only do we plan to feed the world we plan to make people eat better and healthier by creating products they already consume and use.

Potential

The potential for our concept of eating crickets can be huge. Here in Nebraska there is everything we need to be a disruptive force. The amount of land and experienced farmers and ranchers looking for new ideas is growing. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is creating a huge research campus near the university for agriculture technology as we as food science and engineering. The amount of start-ups here in the Midwest looking to shake things up in the world is large as well. The talent and the infrastructure here in the Midwest create an innovation multiplier that the entire world can be affected by. By partnering and working with these organizations BugEater Labs can affect the local Midwest community, the cricket industry, the United States and the World.

Business Case

People should be eating bugs. By the year 2050 there will be 9 billion people in the world. Crickets are the way we are going to keep our protein diets. That is what our team believes. When crickets are raised as livestock they are more nutritional than traditional protein sources and a more sustainable practice. The core of our business is end product development. We are a team of entrepreneurs, food scientists, marketers and designers and our goal is to change societal norms of what we eat. We plan on making products and investing in the cricket industry, from the farms to the processors and to the plate. Our first product is a meal replacement powder that uses cricket powder. In the future we look to create more end products that integrate what people are already eating.

Objectives:

  1. Develop products using crickets; invest into the infrastructure of the cricket industry, to create brands, communities and inform consumers.
  2. create partnerships with companies that can send our product out into the market where we can get feedback and customers.
  3. Fund raise through business plan competitions, getting grants through the chamber of commerce for more funds and finding investors.

Etch-a-Sketch Logo Markup Process

We devised many different forms of our logo for crickets. Every team member drew their form of cricket incorporating a DNA strand and physical make-up. After trying multiple different designs, we still think we need to hire a professional drawer for the task.
