Use Case

Ironically, 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted around the world today and the largest sources of food wastage can be traced back to the wealthier countries. In fact, food wastage by these countries is almost equivalent to the amount of food produced by the sub-Saharan Africa. Food wastage can originate from different stages of the supply chain, from food productions processes to the consumers themselves. Wastages during the production process are often caused by technological constraints and will require technological advances and the diffusion of such new and more efficient technology. What we propose tackles the problem at the household level and is a simple, yet necessary, idea as the starting catalyst to combating poverty.

Potential

Food wastage not only comes from consumption in excess of what one is capable of. It is also a result of bad habits that almost every one of us would have admitted to committing once – buying in excess. This excess food often gets stored away and when one realizes it, they would have gone past their expiry dates. When there is such a variety of food with varying expiry dates laying around, it is no wonder that people will forget. A time indicator rapidly changes color after a specific time interval. The common term for this time indicator technology is visually changing paper. There are several commercially available time indicating systems based on the migration of a colorant or dye.

Business Case

Our business model is a collective business model, where the technology can be shared among all the manufacturers.

Objectives:

  1. Help people remember their expiration date
  2. Prevent over-buying and replacing expired food
  3. Reducing wastage
