Rooty Roofs

Why be on the ground when you could be on top?

Rooty Roofs is an integrated farming system dedicated to grow greengrocers on urban rooftops and sell it freshly to the local population.

Use Case

Ann is an urban citizen who wishes to have healthier food options. However, these products are expensive and hard to find. Rooty Roofs can fill her needs! With local production on her neighbor’s rooftops, Ann realizes that fresh and nutritious food has become more accessible. She notices that people around her are making the best out of the business: jobs are being created on her community, government is promoting tax exemption for productive properties, and her neighbors are earning extra money from renting their rooftops.Rooty Roofs does not affect just Ann but the whole community that surrounds her.Our project creates more pleasant and enjoyable cities, converting underused spots into productive and greener areas, and avoiding the carbon emissions of the groceries transportations.

Potential

Rooty Roofs is not just a rooftop garden, we are proposing a breakthrough on agriculture. By using basic techniques with modern technologies, we can short the distance between crops and consumers. Rooty Roofs aims to achieve these goals by optimizing the urban spaces through precision farming and specialized management for each culture. We developed an intelligent integrated system that increases productivity and maximize resources. Our solution can be adapted for many scenarios, contexts, and situations! We believe that the most efficient solutions are those which are replicable everywhere!

Business Case

Our business concept is shaped on four steps: rent a rooftop for agriculture; start a crop on the rented space; address the harvest to a local post-harvest and distribution center; sell the products at local markets and online. We intend to achieve a low cost production based on some strategic pillars: specialized cell bases - each rooftop will produce a type of vegetable using specific techniques and creating optimum environmental conditions; modular structure – allows the start of new cells quickly; moveable production modules – increases 30% of the agriculturable area since each plant bed will be accessed just when managed, instead of fixed pathways for each one; automated monitoring and irrigation systems – optimizes production, reducing human cost and saving energy and water.

Objectives:

  1. Implement an effective food crops system able to be replicated all over the world.
  2. Promote local development when it comes to social, economic and environmental issues.
  3. Provide fresh, healthy and affordable locally produced food.

The question that puzzled us / Published December 3, 2014 by Guilherme Ricardo Arvate Alvares

The question that puzzled us

Why are we not using this space in a smart and integrated way?

Our proposal is to produce fresh and nutritional food in the urban environment through urban resources optimization and precision farming. Our products will be distributed and sold in the local markets.

We believe that simple and replicable solutions are always the best solutions and we think that we dont need to re-invent the wheel, but make it spin.

Insight + Insight + Insight

During the Define work mode, team Rooty Roofs defined some useful insights that can contribute to the development of our Project. It’s really nice to mention that this step of Design Lab was a milestone for us once we started to realize that our Project could be a big enterprise in a near future. The most relevant insights concerning the scope of Rooty Roofs’ Project are:

• Enhance nutritional security, not just food security. The main idea is to prioritize the qualities of the food. We have to search for more freshness, nourishments, vitamins instead of empty calories in huge amounts of food that can’t provide you the essential nutrients.
• Shortening the distance between producers and consumers. The target is to reduce the costs of regular food in order to provide cheaper alimony for people that can’t afford it.
• Support Market & Value chains for low-income producers and consumers. It’s striking the necessity of making this happen. This producers are responsible for a huge part of the human feeding. We have to support this cause.

Our Mission

Rooty Roofs is an integrated farming system dedicated to grow greengrocers on urban rooftops and sell it freshly for the local population.

Our Background

We are students who were puzzled by the question of how to make sustainable food more affordable to people living in big cities, making healthier food more accessible to a wider public. After some research and brainstorming, we realized that a great way of reducing costs was shortening the distance between producers and consumers, so that we came up with the idea of growing crops on the top of buildings in big cities, enabling not only cost reduction but the improvement of climate conditions in the urban environment.
