Less meat, more green

Project Name: Go Green
Targeted participants: University Students and young people

Content:
1.Our team will design an cellphone application called “Vegetable Garden”, in which users can grow virtual vegetables or trees.

(1)Each user will have his/her own homepage, namely their vege-garden. Users can make friends there and share their experience and feelings after eating a meatless diet. They can earn virtual fertilizers to grow their plants by uploading and sharing the photos of their vegetarian meals.

(2)Moreover, we will invite celebrities who are vegetarians to join in a “celebrity community” in this app, including singers, actors, sports stars, great entrepreneurs, professors as well as philanthropists. They can give full play to their influence to encourage people to eat less meat and more vegetables, and have some interactions with their fans, which will attracts a large number of fans to sign in the app and start to have less meat.

(3)We have an awarding system to attract the app users to keep eating less meat. More vegetarian meals would bring more benefits and surprises to users. It is called “Grow Your Own Tree”:
 If one sustains in eating vegetarian diet for 160 meals(either consecutive or not within 6 months), a tree will be planted in the desert by a third cooperating party, like some ENOGs that focus on the greening of desert, in the name of the person(a card tied to the tree will bear his name, photo or something words he/she would like to say);
 If one sustains in eating vegetarian diet for 400 meals(either consecutive or not within 12 months), he/she will be invited to plant a tree in the desert by himself with all transport expense covered by the organizing party. And we will invite one or two public-spirited celebrities to take part in this activity. This activity will be held once a year with media publicity.

Notes:
 We believe it does work because there are loads of people who want
to have a tree of their own and grow together with it. And it will be such a priceless memory to plant a tree with your favorite celebrity and contribute to environmental protection;
 The trees are grown in desert so they won’t be cut down or for sale.They will grow into towering trees, which would bring benefit to descendant;
 During the New Year or Christmas, the photo of his/her tree will be
sent to the owner, as a greeting card from a friend who is always with him/her.

2. To popularize our app, we will kick it off in campuses:
We will set up an organization named “University Vegetarian Society”, which is made up of students who are environmental enthusiasts in every universities. With their assistance, we can hold a series of activities to advocate our concept“Less meat, more green”, and we hope to establish a holiday named “National University Vegetarian Day”.

On that holiday (the date has yet to be determined), students are encouraged to have a meatless day and school canteens will only provide vegetarian diet that is free of charge. Students can post photos of the meals in the app. People will see how much difference they can make and realize they are not alone in the right direction because an increasing number of people are contributing to a better world.

The support we need:
1. We need technical support to develop and run our app “Vegetable Garden”;
2. We need the help of public relations organization to invite celebrities;
3. We want to make “Grow Your Own Tree” a big environmental protection event so we need media publicity and the advertising funds;
4. We need to cooperate with some Environmental NGOs (mainly that focus on the greening of desert) so that they can provide trees to grow in desert;
5. We need to negotiate with universities to get free vegetarian meals on “National University Vegetarian Day”;
6. We need fund to make or sponsors to provide some gifts and the limited edition T-shirt about our concept “less meat, more green” to the users of our app.

Our Mission

We advocate a low-carbon life by appealing to people, mostly college students and young people, to eat less meat and have a vegetarian diet. Futher more, we conbine eating less meat with forest planting: if the participants sustain in the vegetarian diet for a certain number of months, as a reward, trees will be planted in the deserts in their names, or even they will win an opportunity to plant trees in deserts with their favorite celebrity.

Our Background

People are dying because of the global food shortage. However, over 760 million tons of grain were used to feed animals in 2011(with a global grain harvest topped 2.1 billion tons in 2010). The world's passion for meat is a big cause of global hunger. We want to make a contribution to solving this pressing problem. That is why we try our best to design a project to call on less consumption of meat. This is about the direction everyone should be moving in. We are aiming to reduce the meat consumption, and increase consumption of fruit and vegetables. We hope people will get used to thinking of meat as a treat – it could help to save the world's poor from starvation.
