Nutrigel

Water & Nutrients solidified!

Nutrigel - a solid agent that supplies essential nutrients, water, organic acids & beneficial microbes to varyious seedling crops.

Use Case

Trinidad and Tobago has just entered a recession due to poor governance and corruption. Our major industry which drives our economy, oil and energy has suffered a serious setback due to the global reduction of its price. As such the government has stipulated focus should be placed on locally produced goods and services while simultaneously reducing the amount of imports of a variety of products. It is possible that the major peat moss product used for timely seedling production would become unavailable. If this occurs the entire country’s food system is immediately halted and in the long run severely impacted as an alternative product for seedling production is needed.

Potential

Our product Nutrigel seeks to support seedling production as a locally based, easily & cheaply produced substitute freeing local producers & our resulting food system from dependency on an imported input. Nutrigel uses compost tea which is organic and is derived from food waste. The preferred medium for seedling production is peat moss which is an accumulation of organic matter that naturally functions as a carbon sink & takes the form of wetlands, swamps and the like. In order to conserve such land, improve our food sovereignty and ensure we are able feed our part of the world by 2050, Nutrigel was created. Our product also has the possibility to combat drought by effectively managing moisture content and time releasing nutrients only when the plant needs it.

Business Case

We are using a sustainability focused business model. This is based on the goal to independently support seedling production. Key activities include research & trials followed by production. Key partners are input/service suppliers & producers/users themselves as we feedback on the product. Our value proposition: A sustainable product for use in multiple markets that is organic giving us “green status” and allowing food sovereignty and independence. Target markets include nursery operators, private seedling producers & rural gardeners. Key resources for the project are inputs which are locally available as well as time for continued research. Revenue streams are gained via wholesale and retail sale as well as via gov't grants for development & proliferation. View - http://on.fb.me/1ZTLxnf

Objectives:

  1. To supplement and in the long run replace peat moss for use in seedling production in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean
  2. To assist in ensuring Trinidad and Tobago’s future food sovereignty and self-sufficiency as it relates to food production
  3. To increase water use efficiency & nutrient supply under drought like conditions for crop production

A helping hand

As you know I've been promoting our team via our supporting facebook page, Go Green and Stay Cool & we all know team Nutrigel is one of only three teams from the Caribbean. It's tough as we not only wish to be in the competition but we want others from our part of the world there as well! In the end we only got three teams.

And then bad news hit as one of the teams could not function due to other commitments leaving its brave captain all on her own. Having shown that passion and dedication to start a team showed a lot so we've added her to our team.

Janielle is a passionate young woman who really wishes to make a difference in the world. She comes to Team Nutrigel with expertise in agribusiness and biodiversity conservation which goes hand in had with our product! She's perfect - WELCOME!!!

Successful experiment!

It worked!!! You cannot see it but our experiment worked! We could do with more testing but we just do not have the time for the resources!

Now we need to make changes to our pitch as our test though successful has changed the some premises for our product namely the exact problem that we are solving...am I making sense...in short we have to change a few things but we're sure we can do it!

We really hope to make a big impression with little resources and make it to the finals. Hope to see fellow participants there too!!

Team Nutrigel!

We've had our final discussions! And now we are ready to submit. Our project still has a long way to go. But we feel confident in our submission to TFF and that it can truly make a difference!

Our Mission

We wish to combine simple science with product ingenuity to solve the problems related to dependency on imported farm inputs in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. Trinidad and Tobago is almost completely reliable on imports for everything from food to farm inputs and everything in between. Our solution is to start where the most impact can be made - seedling production. Without seedlings we cannot grow food. There is always a constant demand for seedlings that is never met. With no other method in place to facilitate an appropriate amount what will happen if the importation of peat moss used in seedling production stops?! Our solution is to solidify water and nutrients that are locally sourced and improve our food independence.

Our Background

Our team is small but powerful. We've got Kevonne: a lady of sustainable energy & science, Wilson: a pro chemist & alchemist, Micah: master of all things earth related, Janielle: a woman of the future & passionate conservationist and Keron a journalistic agvocate & entrepreneur! We hope to find the best model that allows science to facilitate food sovereignty. We have found a way! Despite our best efforts to encourage others to enter we are one of only two teams originating out of the Caribbean. But big ideas come from small places! We hope to take our idea to the next step as a viable method to seedling production and thusly food production.
