The seaweed revolution

A source for the future.

To promote sustainable seaweed farming to become the largest commodity by making it easy to grow and easy to use.

Use Case

Using our prototype cultivation model, farmers are able to cultivate macro algae at a lower price with a competitive advantage. By doing so, farmers are then able to supply us with harvested macro algae in which we are able to process through our simple processing steps of washing , drying and chopping the harvested product into user friendly and familiar end products of seaweed chips that can work in both the food and feed industry as shown in our blogs. Our product is then able to serve the food industry by being a fiber and mineral enhancer in everyday foods. For the feed industry it would act as a good supplement for ruminants by reducing land use by replacing silage and also as a feed supplement for the poultry industry to improve gastro-intestinal health of the animals.

Potential

By growing macro -algae to feed the world by replacing large land based agricultural commodity crops. We are able to address global problems such as land degradation, deforestation and the growing middle class. Our idea would be able to help lessen the impact of growing meat demand on the environment by being a more environmentally friendly feed source for animals as well as being an alternative food source for humans, current trends of using macro algae only appears in a niche market. Our goal is to diminish this problem , by introducing the market to producers in different regions of the world to make it an accessible source of food for everyone by processing the macro algae into chips that can be easily accepted by the public.

Business Case

Our core business would be to process harvested macro algae into chips that can then be marketed and used as a food source and also a feed source through our seaweed chips. We plan to do so by introducing the different industries to the potential of the chips by creating small food and feed prototypes as shown in our blogs to show companies the potential of our product. Besides that, our group would also focus on CSR by helping farmers set-up our prototype cultivation method to reduce the carbon footprint of growing maro-algae as well as ensuring a traceable and manageable supply chain of our raw material.

Objectives:

  1. Educating and creating demand for macro-algae as a source food and feed for consumers and producers ultimately to feed the world.
  2. Lowering the cost price of macro-algae cultivation for producers with our prototype made from cheap recycled material.
  3. Processing and producing harvested macro-algae into familiar food and feed formats that is easily accepted by the public.

Seaweed chip fortified food that is able to save cost while feeding the world. (suitable for any staple food)

The picture below shows the overall process in which by using the seaweed chips that we produced. Food producers are able to produce the food types suitable for different culture fortified with seaweed chips to reduce dependency on land based agriculture as our seaweed chips are able to reduce the amount of rice needed and flour needed to reach satiety (full).

Feed prototype

Hey all as we have just shown the food products that can be made with our seaweed or macro-algae chips. Today, we are also unveiling our feed prototype mix that can be made into poultry feed mix that aids digestion of chickens with the fibre content.

Recent studies have shown that by introducing fibre into poultry feed. It reduces the pecking behavior of chickens due to the animals feeling fuller for longer reducing stress levels. Thus, reducing pecking in chicken that may lead to infections and may increase the use of antibiotics as well lowering animal welfare standards by having chickens going through the debeaking process.

BY using our feed prototype farmers are able to reduce cost by using less antibiotics and not have chickens undergo the debeaking process.

Hey all, this is some of the products that can be created with our seaweed chips cultivated with our cultivation system. The gif shows the seaweed chips and the products it is made with like bread and rice. The potentials of this product is that it increases fibre intake and also can work as fortifying nutrient medium by infusing the seaweed chips with nutrients.

Lastly, the beauty of the product is that it doesn't change the nature of the product and it is not visible to the consumer. Hence, reducing the shock factor.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create an organic and natural means to fertilise our soils with seaweed as well as being able to feed the world with something completely new, "macro algae." We provide business owners and farmers with an alternative sustainable method of farming. We also aim to provide job opportunities to modern and rural communities with the hope of improving the standard of living all around the world.

Our Background

Coming from a small town in a developing country, Malaysia where we have accepted the way things were for a very long time until I was in high school. There we were exposed to how the world economics works and how we are making a loss by providing and supplying agriculture products to the developed world, while destroying the environment where we were living in it. For example, we are planting oil palm for the entire world but sustainability of the project and prices in which we are producing isn't sustainable or economically feasible for the future and the developing of a country, in the future we would be faced with many problems due to way we live and practice our agriculture. As a team coming from the same town in Malaysia and currently studying in three different countries which are all considered leading agriculture countries in their respective continents which is Taiwan, Australia and Netherlands has opened up my eyes to the possibilities that there is an alternative way to grow and live on our planet in accordance with nature. Looking back at the way we were taught to plant in Malaysia had really struck me as I started to realise how unsustainable and how much we don’t put an effort into the long run of our soils in such a rich and diverse land like Borneo. It never occurred to us the potential problems in the future as we can only see the profit of today. I and my team would like to change the world by minimizing or even solving two problems we are facing which is the soil acidification by agricultural activities and reducing the ever increasing cost of food. Thus allowing us not only to feed 9 Billion people but to provide a balanced diet to all. For us the answer is to replenish the loss of phosphate minerals and other essential minerals that are being leeched in to the sea in the end by recollecting it through biological means through seaweed. As human, we do things out of self-interest. As businesses, most of the times the cheaper alternative is chosen which unfortunately is the unsustainable method. By using seaweed as a source of fertilizers, due to its abundance and availability, it can be made into fertilizers in almost any country allowing a steady and large supply in almost all countries. With a large supply and many competitors in the market unlike phosphate based fertilizers, the cost of food production could drastically drop which helps us achieve both our aims. Besides that, having a seaweed farm poor farmers are able to plant seaweed with no inputs and upkeep because of the impossible possibility of fertilizing the sea. This increases job opportunities to many communities that are based on islands or live on the sea like our local sea gypsies who have no source of income other than fishing.
