FarmSmart

Solving the agrarian puzzle

A holistic solution to make farming in India more productive, efficient, sustainable and profitable.

Use Case

Ramu like most farmers in India owns around 1 ha of land and uses inefficient farm practices, resulting in very low yield overall. Also, because of such low yields, he is able to earn at most $748 annually. This is insufficient to meet his family’s needs and capital for next season. Ramu is thus incapable of investing in efficient farm practices and technology to increase his yield and income. However one fine day FarmSmart contacts Ramu and he signs the FarmSmart contract. FarmSmart pools his land with other landholdings to form a large cropping area and provides a guaranteed monthly income to him along with quality inputs, modern farm machines and technical know-how. As a result, his yield increases significantly and now he is also able to earn a lot more.

Potential

Most farmers in India only grow wheat and paddy as the government provides assured procurement for these only. This has led to an unbalanced crop distribution resulting in a shortage of other important crops and over-exploitation of resources. Moreover, a long chain of middlemen between the farm and market leads to a huge loss of quality and quantity (upto 40%) of the produce. FarmSmart creates large cropping areas and provides quality inputs, best farm practices, assured procurement for all crops resulting in higher yields and crop diversity. Produce is sold directly to Ag-Industries and retailers, reducing the post harvest losses. This means more quantity and variety of food to feed 9 billion people (of which 1.66 billion would be in India) in 2050.

Business Case

FarmSmart is a holistic solution to increase crop yield (2 to 5 times) and decrease post-harvest losses (upto 40%). Using a contract targeted at small scale farmers (85% of total farmers in India) it will provide them with monthly income and bonuses as incentives to pool their land creating large cropping areas which are economical and productive. The crop produced will be sold directly to Ag-Food industries and retailers circumventing the long chain of middlemen. This results in the reduction of post-harvest losses and generation of high revenues which can bear the cost of farmer incomes, quality inputs(seeds, fertilisers etc) and modern machines leaving us a reasonable commission (2-5%). FarmSmart will thus lead to more food for consumers and higher incomes for farmers.

Objectives:

  1. To ensure more food for rising population by making agriculture more efficient and profitable
  2. To achieve crop diversity, ensuring variety of food in ample quantities
  3. To stop the over exploitation of natural resources in agriculture
