INCULATOR - An automated feeding system which monitors the ruminal pH, calculates the optimal diet and distributes the feed accordingly

Use Case

Max is a dairy farmer in Mumbai. He has a farm of 200 cows and generates revenues by selling his milk to the local market. He has a dedicated feeding-staff, but there has been a constant complaint of lower milk-yield and ill-health of cows. He consults a veterinary doctor and SARA is diagnosed. He now opts for the basic package of Inculator, thereby monitoring Ruminal pH, mixing feed contents appropriately and feeding the cows. Joe, who is just establishing his dairy farm, orders the premium package and automatically feeds his cows according to their Ruminal pH, without even needing a feeding-staff. Sam and his family run their own dairy farm, opt for the regular package and get the desired feed for the cows by pH monitoring. These segments, by using Inculator, boost their profits by 40%.

Potential

SARA is an increasing health problem in most dairy herds resulting in a decreased efficiency of milk production and impaired cow health. The economic cost associated with SARA is estimated to be between $500 million and $1 billion (U.S.) annually for the North American dairy industry. In countries like UK, about 25% of the cows are diagnosed with it and is a highly under diagnosed disease in India, a country with 75 million farms catering 280 millions cows and producing about 135 million tons of milk. Even a fractional increment in it will have a massive impact. Ruminal pH monitoring is one of the methods to cure SARA leading to an increase in the milk production by an estimated amount of 20%, boosting the profits by 40% and hence targeting the aim of feeding 9 billion people in 2050.

Business Case

The business will target organized dairy farms with 50 or more cows with/ without a dedicated feeding-staff through an on-ground sales team. We plan to discover the farms that need our system, by partnering with Veterinary Hospitals/ Indian Veterinary Research Institute that have such data. Producing the whole system involves outsourcing the Boluses and assembling the parts in a production facility. The investment needed for such a production facility can be generated from mid-sized angel-investors. The system will be sold in three different packages depending on the requirements of the farmer. It is capable of boosting the profits of the farmer by 40% by curbing the heavily under-diagnosed condition of SARA and increasing the milk-yield simultaneously.

Objectives:

  1. Arresting the possibility of SARA by rumen pH monitoring
  2. Increase in the milk production and greater life expentancy of dairy herds by optimum nutrition
  3. Decrease the requirement of labor by installation of a programmable feeding system

Our Mission

Sub-Acute-Ruminal-Acidosis (SARA) is a well-recognized digestive disorder among cows with increasing number of cases in most dairy herds. It is caused by an improper feeding mechanism for the dairy cows and can adversely affect the milk production. It is estimated that SARA costs the North American Dairy Industry around $500M to $1B annually. Our team is focusing on coming up with a robust solution to arrest this problem. This is an attempt at increasing the milk production by the dairy farms, minimizing the effect of SARA over cattle and increasing the average life expectancy of a cow.

Our Background

Pursuing our undergraduate from Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay, we are a team of four passionate individuals aiming to provide our contribution towards the problem "How To Feed 9 Billion people till 2050?" Piyush and Shwetali, with their entrepreneurial insights, look at the executional feasibility of the solutions. Abhishek and Akanksha bring innovative answers to complex problems. Having visited 5 dairy farms across Mumbai, we have identified SARA as one of the major inhibitors of dairy milk production yield, and this is our attempt on arresting this problem.
