Kelpÿ Co. is an aspiring kelp chip company created to provide a new food source for America with positive environmental benefits.

Use Case

We want to increase the demand for kelp farms in America by creating sustainable consumer base for kelp. Currently, the market for kelp in America and other non-asian countries is almost non-existent. Kelpÿ aims to create an industry as large and vibrant as the seaweed industry in Asia by designing a product marketed to an American consumer, a product that uses American kelp, and by cooking up a chip made specifically for the American palette. The current seaweed market in America is almost entirely dominated by imported seaweed products. Most of these products are consumed by people whose culture supports seaweed consumption. Typically American culture is not a seaweed culture, but Americans have never really been targeted as seaweed consumers before.

Potential

Our concept will change the world by shifting traditional land agriculture to ocean farming, by mitigating the harmful effect of nitrates (hypoxia) on bodies of water, by creating a healthy product for the American consumer, by providing alternative jobs for fishermen, etc. In fact, Kelpÿ creates such a win win win scenario that it is sometimes hard to focus on one of our company's positives, as there are so many. Rarely do American food companies have so many win-win scenarios. Typically, American companies provide food that is either unhealthy, harmful to the environment, borderline unethical, or too high priced. We hope to "win" in all of the aforementioned categories in comparison to other companies, mainly through the natural virtues of kelp.

Business Case

Key activities of Kelpÿ are the production of kelp chips, the marketing of kelp chips for Americans, cultivating relationships with kelp farmers, cultivating relationships with necessary agencies, and developing a relationship with the food packing industry. Our revenue stream is a food product. Some of the required expenditures for Kelpÿ include distribution, licensing, labor, advertising, utilities, insurance, and raw food material. Our value proposition is that Kelpÿ is healthy, tasty, and helps clean the ocean. We hope that people, ocean farms, agencies, stores, pre-existing kelp farms, and venture capitalists might be interested in partnering with us. The channels for Kelpÿ are any store that might currently sell potato chips. We hope to replace the potato chip in the American diet.

Objectives:

  1. Shift land agriculture to ocean farming.
  2. Create a product that will become the new potato chip for America.
  3. Filter excess nitrates from the ocean to prevent dead spots.

Our Mission

We are Kelpÿ, the kelp chip company that is striving to change the face of the food industry. We are addressing the problem of food security from two angles. First, we aim to shift traditional land agriculture to ocean farming so that we can access underutilized space. Secondly, farming kelp in the ocean filters excess nitrates that primarily come from fertilizers and wastewater, which then replenishes the nitrogen cycle to its original levels, thereby mitigating nitrate issues that fishermen face today. Kelp helps prevent dead spot formations, which then leads to a healthier population of fish. The problem is that in America, there is no market demand for kelp. We believe that by creating a market for kelp with an Americanized product, we can promote kelp farming on a large scale. Kelpÿ is the unconventional solution to increasing food shortage rooted on the desire to clean the ocean.

Our Background

Our team was formed January of 2015 with the mutual goal of cleaning the ocean. By a complicated sequence of events we landed at the idea of making a kelp chip. This led us to the even greater goal of changing the food industry by commercially growing kelp. Through our sustainable development program at Lehigh University we found the Thought for Food Competition and immediately were drawn to its initiative. Thought for Food's main goal matches our own, to feed the world. Some people see the world's problems as out of reach, but Kelpÿ strives to be a driver of change. The success of Kelpÿ on any scale can lead to monumental change in the lives of future generations. The ocean is all around us. We found a way to utilize its grand resources while stopping the degradation human activity currently causes the ocean.
