FarmingCrowd

Preemptive crowdsourcing to avert hunger.

FarmingCrowd is about preemptive food production as a new way of responding to predictable emergency food shortages.

Use Case

Consider Abraha, a small farming village in Ethiopia. Looking at rain forecasts & past famine data, Abraha is extremely likely to experience drought 12 months from today. The typical institutional disaster response is to launch funding appeals in order to procure and deliver food aid for Abraha residents. FarmingCrowd enables multilateral institutions, for-profit companies and individuals to crowdsource funds, information and skills to support pre-emptive food production inside communities facing impending and life-threatening food shortages. Our free app transforms hunger forecasts into interactive infographics that convey information about severity and location of disasters, as well as the resources and skills the communities need to produce their own food against the odds.

Potential

FarmingCrowd is relieving part of the burden of disaster hunger response from multilateral institutions and governments, and spreading this responsibility to private individuals and for-profit companies. Our smartphone app enables individuals and organizations to view the different locations all over the world in which there's evidence of impending hunger and allows them to sign up & respond to their desired hunger hot spots. Instead of just delivering food aid, volunteers and donors help communities get capacity to grow food themselves by infusing skills, installing infrastructure for irrigation and greenhousing, as well as delivering ag equipment and inputs. Volunteers and donors may be based in-country or elsewhere in the world, and may be institutional or private individuals or groups.

Business Case

FarmingCrowd is a nonprofit initiative aimed at preemptively and proactively preventing global hunger. The initiative is supported by donations and charitable contributions, as well as vending proprietary data and in-depth scholarly statistics and publications to researchers, journalists and institutions.

Objectives:

  1. Make sense of disparate weather forecasts and patterns as well as historical data in order to avert hunger.
  2. Develop an online platform to enable EVERYBODY to participate in ending hunger worldwide.
  3. Educate the world about where hunger occurs, its effects and how we can proactively end it.
