The Black Sheep Truck

All food is made equal!

Our food truck saves fruits and veggies that have unconventional characteristics and offers healthy, affordable, delicious meals.

Use Case

We target consumers falling in the following categories: - Those who want delicious on-the-spot meals, but lack time to cook or look for food (e.g. student and urban professionals). - Those who want to consume healthy and nutritious meals (e.g. affluent and highly educated urban consumers). - Those who are sensitive about food waste and would like to contribute in a socially responsible business (e.g. proactive consumers). Our customers will be able to locate us and check our menu by using a smartphone application and purchase fresh and tasteful meals, at affordable prices, in their neighborhood. Promotional offers aiming to increase awareness (e.g. bring a friend, get 2-for-1) may also be available.

Potential

Food waste is a major cause of hunger. Today, a third of all food produced is never consumed. We focus on reducing urban food waste. Our idea is unique in the sense that it creatively combines the following: - we optimize the food chain at community level by reducing waste and its management; - we run a sustainable business addressing the demand for healthy, affordable, on-the-spot meals, while minimizing our operational footprint leveraging on technology; - our business model is easy to implement and to adjust to cultural and market specificities, and therefore, it is scalable across geographies and sources of food. We start from a large, affluent, European market dedicated to gastronomy. Street food in France counted USD 698 million in sales in 2012 and posted annual growth of 5%.

Business Case

We daily collect ingredients for our meals from local farmers at discounted prices or from supermarkets that under the French law are obliged to dispose of food about to expire. Afterwards, our truck heads to selling locations, where meals are prepared and sold. We target students and urban professionals who find value in healthy, affordable, on-the-spot meals. Common locations are student campuses, urban squares, business districts, open markets, and any other vibrant neighborhood. Customers can find us and check our menu by using a smartphone application. Delivery may be available after the initial phase. Revenues from sales will be used to cover our operational costs as well as investments. Profits from our operations will be donated to local charities.

Objectives:

  1. To run a sustainable business: We are the first socially responsible non-profit food truck dedicated to the reduction of urban food waste.
  2. To bring quality into the urban food mainstream: We prepare with love delicious and nutritious meals, based on whatever we have in hand.
  3. To raise awareness about urban food waste: We incentivize consumers to rethink the way they consume food.

Our Team

Our Mission

We want to change the way people think about food and its consumption. We aim to tackle food waste all along the food chain, starting with an easy-to-implement and scalable concept: a food truck. We believe food should not be selected based on its appearance but rather on its nutritional value. Good food should and can reach anyone. With our food trucks, we serve urban communities with delicious meals made of visually unattractive or unsold food (the "Black Sheep Products") and aim to contribute in the reduction of urban food waste. Our Black Sheep Truck operates upon the following principles: (1) Acceptance: We embrace all types of food regardless of their color, appearance, age or place of origin. Fine dining should not be defined by the appearance of its raw materials but rather the emotions it evokes and memories it triggers. (2) Care: We collect our raw materials and prepare our meals with utmost care. (3) Quality: We are dedicated to excellence and want to harness the enthusiasm around Black Sheep products and create a sense of community around our business. (4) Fairness: We treat our business partners, associates, and customers with respect and share value stemming out of business ventures within the community we do business. (5) Simplicity: We believe that change can happen through simple and reasonable solutions to everyday life problems. We are not afraid to try. We are the Black Sheep Truck! Soon, close to your neighborhood!
