Food Survival Guide

Maximize Food. Minimize Waste. Spread Awareness.

We aim to educate consumers about maximizing food usage by providing them an app with recipes, food storage records and helpful resources

Use Case

Users of our app will scan their food item, for example a carrot, with their phones. The app will recognize the image and input the time it was purchased, and give the user the option to input a reminder notification, to prompt them to use that food item at a later date. The food item will be stored in the app and the user will have the ability to check the food's nutritional information, view simple single person recipes, and learn the best storage methods for that individual food. If the reminder option was selected the app will send the user a notification after the allotted time, reminding them that they still have the food item. If the user has already eaten the item they can dismiss the notification, if not they have successfully been reminded to eat the food before it expires.

Potential

The purpose of the Food Survival Guide app is to help users make informed decisions on preparing food safely and efficiently while minimizing food waste. Worldwide, close to half the food that is produced is sent to landfills. People need a quick and convenient way to maximize their food usage while ensuring that their meals are nutritious and created with minimal food waste. We would like to ensure that people who are new to cooking or buying food are equipped with the relevant knowledge to do so. Consumers can learn how to prepare food within its edible lifespan, including its proper storage, differentiate between what is edible and what is not, and develop an intuition for safe food preparation through the simple and convenient use of the app.

Business Case

In terms of creating a source of revenue, we plan to promote store flyers and recommend seasonal items available at local grocery stores. We also hope to provide sponsored links to student-friendly recipes for meal suggestions. By partnering with organizations such as Health Canada or the CFIA, we can provide credible food safety information from trusted sources. Establishing ourselves as a trusted source for such information will garner support from our intended audience, Eventually, we hope to add features to improve the user-friendliness of our interface by minimizing user input. Instead of manually inputting grocery items, we could explore the potential use of Google Goggles or QR codes that would automatically identify the items and make using the app more efficient.

Objectives:

  1. To reduce food waste through increased buyer awareness and education.
  2. Use the app to educate users about maximizing food usage by developing a food intuition mindset.
  3. Provide recipes describing how to use a food item effectively to maximize food usage.

Our Mission

Our mission is to increase user awareness of the food they consume and minimize the amount of food they throw out.

Our Background

Our team came together at a school challenge to reduce food waste at our university. It was a 24 hour 'hack-a-thon' style event where the idea for this application was born. We are all students coming from a variety of backgrounds, personally and academically. Somehow, through that weekend we managed to come together and win the contest. Soon afterwards, a professor introduced us to the Thought for Food Challenge and we just couldn't resist. The idea of participating in a global event and presenting our ideas alongside hundreds of others was thrilling. It was great to think that so many other people were all striving to achieve the same idea- feeding the world. It's been a tough couple months, we were worried about starting the project so late, mid October, compared to other teams who had had months. In the end I think we are proud of what we have submitted and no matter what the outcome of this competition, we look forward to expanding our application and achieving our goals. If anything, we have all learned a lot preparing this pitch, skills which we will no doubt transfer over to our app idea. It's been a great experience, and we know it would be an amazing experience to continue on in the program.
