ShroomsBlooms

Healthier Diet. Healthier Future.

It is an innovative way to grow mushrooms, while empowering families living on or below the poverty line through contact farming.

Use Case

United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization says one in nine or around 11% of the people in the world were suffering from malnutrition between 2012 and 2014, 98% of whom lived in the developing countries. Jamal is one such person. Living in a rural area of Bangladesh, he failed to meet ends meet for his family let alone providing proper nutrition for them. ShroomsBlooms will initially target the rural and sub-urban areas of Bangladesh. Trained professionals would at first demonstrate the cultivation process firsthand and teach them to build the bamboo structure. Each trainer would be assigned a particular area to monitor and ensure that the process is implemented correctly. With the help of ShroomsBlooms, Jamal and his family can obtain proper nutrition in their daily diet.

Potential

ShroomsBlooms will bridge the gap between the demand and supply of nutrition in the third world countries. The project can start out small such as in the rural and sub-urban areas of Bangladesh. Then it can be expanded to other developing countries similar to our country. The innovative cultivation system using bamboo ensures that good quality mushrooms can be grown produced by anyone almost anywhere at a very low cost. The mushrooms, served as sides, would provide the required nutrients in the daily diet. At the moment people are not so keen on making mushrooms as part of their diets but their potential is unprecedented and the number of lives that is can change is countless. Cancer preventing properties, among other benefits, will make them a popular super food in the near future.

Business Case

ShroomsBlooms will use a co-operational business model where we will partner with various NGOs to supply families living on or below the poverty line with the means necessary to grow mushrooms. The families would be part of a contract farming program. After consumption, surplus mushrooms will be collected, dried and sold to local markets. There will be a toll free hot-line which the local farmers can use notify us of their surplus. A portion of the revenue will be returned to the farmers. The rest will be used to sustain operations and expand. Awareness through radio and television will help spread the word. Such promotions would show:-The benefits of mushrooms-The simplicity of participating in the contract farming program-The extra income that they can bring to the families

Objectives:

  1. Raise awareness of the potential of mushrooms and making them a part of the regular diet.
  2. Empower families living on or below the poverty line in the process by giving them a DIY solution to undernourishment.
  3. Putting project ShroomsBlooms at the frontier in the fight against malnutrition.
