MyCycle

Connect. Cultivate. Consume.

Using hoop house technology and common industrial and agricultural byproducts, MyCycle makes small scale mushroom cultivation easy for all.

Use Case

MyCycle reaches a variety of people, ranging from small and subsistence farmers to suburban gardeners and urban farmers. Mushrooms are native to nearly all regions of the world giving MyCycle the advantage of providing local, nutritious food globally. A subscription with MyCycle would provide a user with a hoop house micro-climate, as well as a seasonal shipment of mushroom inoculant. In addition to this we would provide the subscriber with pamphlets going over nutritional information and cultivation instructions as well as tips for drying and recipes that incorporate cooking with mushrooms. All of this information would be tailored to the strain of mushroom and the geographical location of the user.

Potential

Hunger and lack of proper nutrition is a continuing global challenge as the population grows. MyCycle sees potential in using agricultural byproducts to increase food production through mushroom cultivation. By purchasing a subscription, MyCycle provides a simple and easy way for anyone to grow mushrooms and contribute to the fight against hunger. The subscription provides a Cube House, education on mushrooms, and inoculant. In addition to that, we provide the same resources to a subsistence farmer in need. By choosing strains that flourish in the region's climate we will reduce the user's workload and energy inputs. MyCycle gives anybody the ability to grow nutritious mushrooms, and is empowering anybody from the farmer on one hectare of land to an apartment dweller in the United States.

Business Case

When a customer buys a subscription to MyCycle, they receive an easy to construct mini hoop house and their first strain of mushroom inoculant. We also provide an educational pamphlet with instructions, recipes, and our contact information in case users want more information. MyCycle uses the "buy one, give one" business model to empower subsistence farmers around the world. This means when a customer signs up for a MyCycle inoculant subscription, they're also buying one for a farmer in need.

Objectives:

  1. Provide a simple and effective way for farmers and city dwellers alike to produce their own protein dense mushrooms.
  2. Educate the world on the benefits of producing mushrooms and the empowerment of growing your own food.
  3. Contribute to the advancement of water and soil conscious agriculture.

Our Mission

We are a team comprised of Biological and Agricultural Engineering students. Our studies promote the idea of making more efficient use of what we have, and creating more of what we need. We stand for a cheap and easy way to supplement the diets of those in need. MyCycle wants to help solve the problem of feeding the world while considering restrictions such as population growth, available resources, arable land, and global climate change.

Our Background

Throughout the world there is a perception that crop residue, animal waste, and industrial byproducts such as sawdust and cardboard are useless. MyCycle wants to create an easy way for farmers worldwide to use this waste in order to reduce greenhouse gases and hunger at the same time. Mushrooms provide nutrients that are lacking in the diets of the developing world such as potassium, iron, vitamin D, and protein. MyCycle will engineer a small semi-controlled environment to house agricultural residue, animal waste, and industrial byproducts that will in turn produce high yields of nutrient-rich mushrooms. Agriculture is responsible for feeding the world and as a result is responsible for one-third of green house gases emitted each year. An increase in population will result in an increase in agricultural production and its effects on global climate change. There is no choice but to find solutions for feeding our growing population, however we must do so in an environmentally responsible manner. MyCycle will be reusing what is once considered waste, to produce nutrient dense food that will help feed a growing population. There is no simple solution to this crisis, it is our generation's responsibility to work together and develop as many alternatives as we can if we want to see a sustainable future. Thought For Food would be an excellent opportunity for us to exchange ideas and concepts with those aspiring to change the world.
