Dear fellow participants,
Today was an exiting day for team Nutricup! With the help of an graphic designer we where able to make 3d drawings of our Nutricup. This means we are now able to 3d print our concept and continue testing with a real prototype! After testing with our improvised kitchen build prototypes we where able to decide on a version to draw and produce.
We are very happy we allready got to this stage and will continue working hard and spend time testing and improving our concept to be able to fight malnourishment as soon as possible. Prosperty or poverty, everybody deserves it to be healthy. Next to that healthy people can care for their children, grow crops to feed the world and fight their way out of poverty. We are willing to contribute to that with our Nutricup.
Eating vegetable sprouts
Many people are lacking nutrients in their diets for a healthy live. On the other side, many people having access to healthy food are looking how to eat healthier. We found out many people don’t know what vegetable sprouts are and so have no idea of the nutritional values of sprouts, there taste and the advantages it can have for them. It is off course a challenge to get people eating vegetable sprouts when they are not familiar with it, but don’t forget this is why it is such a huge opportunity.
To clarify how they can be consumed, above some example dishes shown on the picture. Vegetable sprouts can be an ingredient in many different kind of dishes. In poorer countries they can be used in warm dishes and baked, making them best digestible and can be used in salads. As you can see too, vegetable sprouts are considered as super foods, confirming what we say.
Testing our prototype
After much work on researching, developing our concept product and interviewing here a follow-up with our first test with our self-made prototype of our product concept. We build the prototype the size it should be with plastic cups and after testing it proved our product concept works. We compared it with other models and our model resulted in faster production, higher quality and lower water usage. With this self-made prototype it took a week to produce mong sprouts, which will even be shorter when it would be printed or manufactured. Only 3.5 cl water was added to produce the sprouts as on the picture. With the current concept the gaps on the sides of the cup causes the cup to leak water when turned around. That is something we want to improve with next prototypes.
Our test shows the system works and it only needs some perfection. If we have done more tests we can try to print it with a 3D printer. We can make sure to bring prototypes including seeds to Zürich to prove everyone that it works.
Thank you for reading!
Designing the Nutricup
It was a while ago before we posted our last blog, we spend our time in designing and improving our Nutricup, We also met several people about how we could establish our ideas.
We started with the idea that vegetable sprouts have a great potential in adding important nutrients to diets. We know how companies in West-Europe produce the vegetable sprouts, but that is to high tech realize our goals. We want to create an product that is cheap, accessible and understandable. We started to draw again and came up with the design that is showed in the picture above this article.
Our design makes use of the natural occurring effect of heat induction. When you put the seeds in the cup and add water the seeds will start to germinate. This causes a rising temperature in the inner cup and this creates the right air flow to keep the moist flowing to the air. On company level they use heating and fans, next to that they spray the vegetable sprouts every ten minutes. Because of our closed system the air keeps flowing and the seeds keep wet without any technology are constant input needed. Because the evaporated water stays within the cup water is saved too, compared to all current vegetable sprout products.
We talked about our design with the owners of taste sensations, they are very enthusiastic and believe it will work since the cup creates the right environment for the seeds to grow. We are now starting to build a prototype to test this principle. We are excited to have some results next week!
Building Team spirit after finishing video shots.
Friday 27th of November 2015 we were like movie stars managing one take after another. Creating almost 3 hours of footage for just 30 seconds of video.
This asked for a good review and a fun night to assure a good communication with the 3 of us. A bar was a good place for this of course.
The best conclusion of the day was that even when we disagreed in decisions we managed to agreed quickly due to our clear vision and goal get Nutricup from the ground.
