Pacific Protein Project

Building a food security future for the most vulnerable communities.

CLICz will sell a Red Palm Weevil larvae farming system whilst establish PIFA, an insect nursery and fund a Palm Conservation Foundation.

Use Case

CLICz aims to empower communities towards becoming self- sufficient through enabling farmers to utilise more efficient methods of protein production. The design of the farming system is developed to be adaptable and climate smart in order to deal with the increasing pressure of food insecurity in the pacific. CLICz's user concept is described as the development of Red Palm Weevil Farms throughout small islands in the Pacific and in the long term, the development of more Entomophagy industries within and beyond the region. CLICz will sell farming systems to users, enabling them to utilise the set-up PIFA network which communicates new innovations throughout the region to further empower local farmers. Communities become self- sufficient whilst simultaneously combatting food sustainability.

Potential

Currently, Red Palm Weevils are only intensively farmed within the Southern Thailand region making it a vastly under utilised protein and income source. CLICz's aim is to provide the mechanisms of a standardised, innovative technology to a greater number of regions in the South Pacific as well as across Asia. The Pacific is host to perfectly fertile conditions as well as palms being uniquely adaptive to climate changes in nature. Farming palm weevils use low and cheap technology that is easily replicated. Similarly, the weevil is currently over looked in the edible insect boom but has similar protein levels as beef and far greater iron, potassium and zinc levels. Currently eaten in Asia as a delicacy, weevils are increasingly appearing in western meals, showcasing great potential for trade

Business Case

CLICz will sell Red Palm Weevil insect breeder systems on a loan scheme with low interest repayments. The breeder system allows for self-sufficiency for remote communities or the option to sell production to a market vendors. With increasing western demand, there is the potential for CLICz to become a trade channel, linking local vendors with international consumers. Likewise, bi-products such as natural liquid and solid fertiliser will be processed and sold via CLICz with a percentage of the profit returning to farmers. Long term goals include the re-investment of profits into PIFA building including a palm conservation centre, a research centre focusing on food security and the extension of pilot projects throughout the islands.

Objectives:

  1. Provide Climate Smart-Self Sufficient protein (in the form of Red Palm Weeival Larvae - Sago Worm) in Small Islands in the Pacific.
  2. Establish the Pacific Insect Farming Association [PIFA] which aims up-skill farmers, communicate & invest in research R+D and innovation
  3. Establish a Palm Conservation Foundation aiming to promote forest restoration and put start up nursaries to conserve palm material.

Our Mission

CLICz motto is to learn, innovate and grow. We have numerous and innovative solutions towards food security, Currently are main focus is turning our attention hunger, climate change and water security will which is intensifying in Small Island States and Torres Straits Islands in the South Indo-Pacific. The United Nation have stated that communities in the Pacific are most from the adverse effects of climate change. This has intensified an El Nino period which exuberates drought and small islands risk to food insecurity. CLICz are responding to Pacific Leaders who are calling for action and sustainable development. Our aim is to apply low technology for vulnerable communities in the Indo- Pacific to provide climate- smart sustainable nutrition.
