AriGro

AriGro: Food Solution for One-Third of the World Population

A greenhouse equipped with ETHE to increase crop yield & gain food security by regulating the temperature in hot, arid climate year round.

Use Case

Our intended users are the farmers of the arid regions and various agricultural research institutes. Some of the basic climatic problems they face are high temperature, scarcity of water, alkaline & infertile soil etc. Few varieties of crops are cultivated. Production time frame can be as short as 5 months and is low yielding. E.g. in the semi-arid Pacific north-west of the USA, successful wheat production has been achieved on mean annual rainfall of 240 - 400 mm but this is mainly winter rainfall, and the system requires substantial inputs of machinery, capital, and fertilizer. In summer rainfall areas, there are promising developments of dry-land farming techniques facilitated by NGOs although farmer acceptance is still limited. Low training and poor infrastructure worsen the problems.

Potential

About one-third of the Earth consists of arid regions plagued with various problems for average farming techniques. AriGro will solve some major cultivation problems that farmers in these regions face. This is a low tech and cost effective setup which uses a mechanism to control the ambient temperature within the greenhouse. Using this setting to grow crops, high yield with limited use of water can be ensured round the year. The variety of crops cultivated can also be increased through this greenhouse equipped with ETHE. With AriGro we will provide an easy cultivation method to increase the production and quality of crops leading to solution of production problems and ensuring food security for the inhabitants of these regions.

Business Case

Our customer segments are the farming communities & research institutes of hot, arid regions. Our product will be a lifetime investment for the farmers as the greenhouse will be effective for decades with the ETHE pipes and provide a sure way of managing scarce resources like water, fertilizer etc. better. After orders are placed, we will source the raw materials and set up the whole structure in the farmland. We will reach them through global distribution channels. Cost will be incurred for raw materials, setting up the structure and maintenance & profit generated from the sale of the whole package at a mark up. Partnering with development bodies such as UNDP, WHO & WFP will give us better access to our target groups & help with agricultural counseling & tackling food scarcity at large.

Objectives:

  1. AriGro will increase the production of crops manifold inside the greenhouse than those produced in open fields.
  2. Facilitate growth of a variety of crops which generally cannot be cultivated due to absence of suitable climate in hot, arid regions.
  3. AriGro will require less water for cultivation than conventional requirements for farming and save water (about 1/3 less than regular)
