FLuB - Free Lunch Box

Feed 9 billion people one lunch at a time

Design and place food-boxes in places where people can pick up left-over food from company and university meetings

Use Case

After lunch meetings at companies, universities or public institutions, a lot of delicious food is left over, that in many cases will simply be thrown away. We want to give the food a chance to fulfill its destiny; being eating. We will realize that with our amazing Free Lunch box - FLuB, in which left-overs can be deposited to give them the fair chance to be eaten that they deserve. A built-in scale in the food-box will trigger the built-in camera to take a photo of the fresh food that has been placed in the box. Users of our FLuB app who are in the proximity of the food-box will be notified about fresh food. In the app the user will find a photo of food placed in the box and can make his way to the box to pick up his free lunch.

Potential

We see a huge opportunity in the reduction of lunch leftovers, which are currently simply disposed of at many universities, public institutions and companies. Having to throw away leftovers not only creates a lot of waste which needs to be properly managed, but also wastes a lot of resources. Paying for the preparation of food and its disposal creates a negative financial impact without creating any value for either side, neither institutions nor its students/staff. By using FLuB we can tackle both these problems at once, and ultimately reduce the ecological footprint of an institution while helping them save money at the same time.

Business Case

We, the FLuB team, hope to use the Thought For Food Challenge as a means to further develop our product, gather more user feedback and gain momentum to start the roll out of FLuB across the Netherlands. Primarily we will focus on large university campuses, followed by large public institutions and companies, which are interested in decreasing their ecological footprint. The learnings from the constant expansion will directly influence the development and refinement of the FLuB box to design the ideal box for further expansion across the globe.

Objectives:

  1. Reduce food waste in universities, public institutions and companies
  2. Create awareness about food waste through our platform
  3. Expand the reach of our project and save one lunch at a time wherever possible
