Save food to Secure food.

We connect the end user to the farmer for least wastage and provide financial and technological support to farmers.

Use Case

India is the largest producer of fruits (82 MT in 2013) and 2nd largest producer of vegetables (121 MT in 2013).65% of the population depends on Agriculture for its primary income. An average farmer growing fruits and vegetables is paid only 25-30% of what the consumer pays, the remaining is taken away by a number of intermediaries. Moreover, loss on field pre harvesting is around 20%. There is no proper storage facility available for the farmer to store his produce till he fetches a higher price. Hence, he is forced to sell it to the local trader at the quoted price soon after harvesting. The harvesting and handling of fruits post-harvest is highly unscientific. The farmer in his quest to earn more, uses more fertilizers . The result is decreasing productivity.

Potential

*When our model is scaled through out India we can feed extra 94 million people who are suffering from hunger.*We can create 9,47,000 jobs.*The farmer’s revenue is increased by 5.55% and the consumer saves 2.33% on the purchases*When farmer revenue is increased loyalty will be gained and he will invest in scientific methods served by MayiSara.*Better Post Harvesting techniques and Micro Cold Chamber improves the rural Infrastructure motivating farmers to produce more.*This model can be replicated in growing economies. * If replicated in africa we attain food security & nutrition security as malnutrition is a major problem.

Business Case

The model focusses on setting up Company owned Franchisee Operated procurement centres at the village level. These centres would be owned by Mayisara but operated by Rural Communities to improve efficiency of operations. This also improves livelihood of rural communities. The food collected is stored in Solar Powered Micro Cold Chamber at every procurement centre. When need arises it is sent to the hub through reefer vans. Thus wastage due to over-supply can be controlled. The fruits are processed and packed at the hub before being sent to customers. In the second phase, a gamut of services will be provided to farmers including technical, financial and informational to increase the productivity.

Objectives:

  1. To increase the availability of food by 15% in the first three years by focussing on reduction of food wastage.
  2. To establish a well-set Infrastructure for fresh produce and increase affordability of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  3. To increase self-dependency of local communities by providing them self-employment opportunities through COFO procurement centres.

Our Model / Published January 10, 2016 by Shashank S

Our Model

The first step is to set up cold storage at the villages to enable proper storage of post-harvest. For this, solar powered cold chain is utilized considering that India gets an average 2800 hours of sunshine annually. The solar storage is empowered with 24 hrs Thermal back-up and 5-6 ton capacity. The flow of goods will be as follows: Farmer deposits his produce at the procurement centre where primary grading and sorting is done. The Procurement centres would be company owned and Franchisee operated(CoFo ProcurementCentres).Cofo Centres would be run by Farmer Produce Organisations, thus creating more jobs in rural areas(230jobs in the pilot phase)The produce is stored in the cold store till the order is generated from the hub.The hub is the centre for quality check, grading, sorting and packing based on retailer’s requirements. The hub procures from the procurement centres and packs based on the specifications as and when the retailer generates an order. The payment is received by the farmer through his bank account within two days. This model directly links farmer to the consumer reducing food wastage by 15% in the first five years. The farmer’s revenue increases by 5.55% and the customer pays 2.33% lesser. Moreover, a sustainable supply chain is materialized securing future production of fruits and vegetables.
In the second phase, the farmers will be provided extension services for increasing productivity. MayiSara would provide farm equipment on rental basis, seeds and fertilizers at wholesale prices to increase the productivity. Moreover, credit facility would be provided for ensuring affordability of the service. For this the team will have collaborations with banks and financial institutions. Our Target is to increase availability of food by 25% in 10 yrs.
