Waste edible oil to save lives

Quitoil is re-purposing waste vegetable oil from homes and restaurants to create insecticides products to fight malaria in Africa.

Use Case

The typical mid-sized restaurant in downtown Kampala produces up to 30 liters of waste cooking oils and fats each day. The owner either has dispose of this waste oil at a cost, polluting the environment, or be forced to reuse it, significantly affecting the quality and safety of the resulting foods.Quitoil provides this restaurateur an option to monetize the waste oils and fats by buying it from our network of waste oil vendors using our smartphone app and pick-up service. The oils and fats are then transformed into a range of anti-mosquito insecticides that are environmentally friendly and safe for indoor use.

Potential

Quitoil's core objective is to reduce the malaria disease burden by curbing the breeding and spread of mosquitoes in developing countries. With the thousands of edible oil users in homes and businesses, our smartphone app and pick-up service provides a convenient platform for us to tap into a virtually unlimited supply of waste oils and fats from consumers and enterprises. Given the high density and adhesive properties of our range of products, they remain effective against larvae and adult mosquitoes many weeks after they're first applied.Being oil-based insecticides, it is easy to integrate a wide range of fragrances in the product. As such, our insecticides may also be used in such applications as indoor air fresheners and candles with mosquito repellent properties.

Business Case

Quitoil is an impact-oriented social enterprise existing mainly to eliminate Africa's biggest killer disease, malaria, by manufacturing and marketing products that eliminate malaria vectors. While all our products are sold at competitive rates, all our profits are sowed back into making anti-mosquito products accessible to even the remotest parts of the developing world.Proceeds from our range of premium products support our social impact, non-commercial activities that include advocacy for indoor residual spraying, community sensitization as well as supporting organizations with missions similar to ours.

Objectives:

  1. Developing anti-mosquito waste edible oil-based formulations for use in manufacturing insecticides to fight malaria int he developing world.
  2. Being at the forefront of research and development at the intersection of food waste and disease control.
  3. Supporting community-based efforts aimed at responsible disposal of waste edible oils and fats in order to preserve the environment.
