A hungry man is an angry man!

Have you ever seen someone eat from the refuse bin? Do you know of anyone one or families that go to bed with an empty stomach. These ought not to be as science has made it possible to even grow enough food that will feed the citizens of the world on a small tract of land. Inability to feed ones self takes away all dignity, prone to crime and to be manipulated in the political process as their conscience can be exchanged for a pack of peanuts.

But hey! While all these happen tons of food are wasted daily. Let's do something before those that can afford food can't eat in peace because millions can't afford theirs.

Our Mission

We are a team of 2 females (Sadiya and Fiona) and 1 male (Enobong) from universities in Nigeria. Sadiya is an accounting undergraduate student and Enobong is an MSc student of economics both from Benson Idahosa University, Edo State Nigeria. While Fiona is a microbiology undergraduate student from Cross River State University, Calabar Nigeria. Coming from a less developed country we have seen and heard stories of how families struggle to have one decent meal meanwhile at the end of the food distribution value chain, supermarkets and other organized food vendors throw out tons of expired processed food daily. Our team believes we can create value linking these two entities in a win-win situation for all. Poor families get to receive soon to be expired food at a huge discount, the sellers make some decent sales from products they usually would have thrown away, our team takes a commission and the environment benefits from a reduction in toxic wastes from cans that are non-degradable coupled with the fact that our wastes management in this part of the world does not have infrastructure for recycling.

Our Background

With about 50 million mobile phones (and still counting) out of a population of 180 million people, our team believes we can leverage on this to solve the problem of market failure due to information asymmetry to end extreme hunger and food wastages in Nigeria and the world at large. Going forward, this will also go a long way to stemming the tide of environmental pollution as our cities increasingly become over crowded. Our plan is simple, we want to use this medium to seek funding inorder to actualise our business plan. The funding will aid us set up the supporting structures which are to build our foodring mobile apps, hold symposiums and seminars across the country to sensitize concerned government regulators/supermarkets and people we call last mile resellers (people that will serve the rural illiterate population). How will our plan work? We intend to create a smart easy to use mobile platform that uploads soon to expire food products at discounted prices with the location of the seller for prospective buyers to take advantage. Every product will generate a unique coupon (known to the seller) on booking through the app which the buyer will have to show at the counter to make an effective purchase. The team will charge a commission of 5% for every sale. Since online payments in Nigeria are geared towards pay on delivery (which is still a challenge), our commission will be collected through the sellers which is the more reason we need to mainstream them as strong partners especially in the technology backend. For this reason, sellers will be given unique administrator rights that they can login to view summary bookings made on their products. It is our believe that the successes and experiences we get from working in a business challenging developing country like Nigeria we give us the impetus to scale up to the west Africa region and even beyond. The diversity of our team stands us out as the economist among us will handle the market demand and business regulations, the microbiologist will handle the safety regulations and the accountant will handle our bookkeeping to make sure we remain viable.
