Micro Pilot Testing of SuperSoup- A Cup of Warm Smile!
The prevalence of malnutrition in Bangladesh is a matter of great concern. Around 7 million children, who are living below the poverty line, are significantly vulnerable to this problem as the foods they consume lack the proper nutrients and minerals which are vital for growth. Poor intake of foods rich in iron and folic acid and multiple infections have resulted in high rates of anemia among pregnant women and children less than two years. The core reason behind this problem is poverty.
This is where SuperSoup comes to help. To figure out whether our primary target group- the poverty stricken children like the taste of SuperSoup or not, we conducted a micro pilot testing. We distributed Super Soup among twenty children, and their reaction was priceless. They just loved the taste of it, and they opined they will love to have to this soup every day in their meals. Their motivation and preference about the soup increased when they were told that this soup contains high nutrients which will help their proper growth. Almost all of them asked for a second serving of soup. A cup of warm SuperSoup created such a beautiful smile on their faces, which proved how much they enjoyed every sip of it.
The Moment of Revelation & The First Attempt
When we first decided to compete in TFF challenge, we started to brainstorm and generate ideas. While eating chicken grill in a restaurant and thinking about how we can feed 9 billion people by 2050, a moment of revelation occurred when Istehad saw a large number of chicken bones been thrown away to the bins.
When he was 7 years old, his grandma saw him being wasteful with the bones and taught him to break bones with teeth. He says that was the best thing that ever happened to him! He madly fell in love with the bones and hardly, threw away any bone without having the marrow. But it all changed when he was 14, and was attending a wedding ceremony. His mom saw him eating bones there and scolded him for it, explaining to him that it was immodest to eat bones in public places.
He did research to see was whether there were any reason for such behavior that gave rise to the convention of not eating bones in public. His findings were quite shocking as he shared: 'bones are very rich in vitamins and minerals and in fact very nutritious for our health.'
As we were doing a lot of research to find solution to the food insecurity and the associated problems, we were aware of the fact that a significant number of people in our country are suffering from malnutrition, while we due to some odd convention throw away bones - complete waste of a food item so rich with nutrients. We decided to do something on that. As we requested to take the bones from our meal to home, the restaurant owner happily provided us with a box full of chicken bones. As soon as we reached home, we started looking for ideas to make use of the nutritional values of the bones. Then it all occurred to us that we can turn these bones into easily digestible form like soup and distribute it to the people suffering from malnutrition. Then we started our first attempt to soup from bones and it was a failure. It tasted disgusting. I asked mom for help and after listening to all our "adventures" she laughed, tasted it and found that we missed out on the seasoning. She then took care of the cooking and made the first perfect homemade version of SuperSoup.

Annual mass of bones from chicken consumption 2014: 160000000*3.74 = 598400000 kg * 0.38 = 227,392,000 kg
Annual mass of bones from chicken consumption 2020: 160000000*8.42 =1347200000kg * .38=522,196,000kg
2. Assuming 82% weight loss due to dry for soup and processing system, some 5 million kilograms of soup powder can be produced meeting the nutritional need of 0.46 million people for a year! (5.6 million for a month).
A 40g pack of Knorr soup serves 4. So, 10g serves 1 people for once.
5 million kilograms of bones can serve: 5/0.01 = 500 million people for once. Considering it will be taken 3 times a day, it can feed 500/3 = 166.67 million people for a day, 166.7/30 =5.56 million people for a month and 5.56/12 = 460,000 people for a year.
The assumptions are very conservative as annual meat consumption per capita in Bangladesh according to WHO is 7.3 kg in 2014 (NewsNext BD, 2014) almost half the amount used for calculation. It is done to offset the challenges in bone collection, loss due to processing etc.

Homemade Recipe of SuperSoup
After a lot of hardwork and experimentation over the last few weeks, last week I was able to come up with a recipe for the homemade version of the soup that will surely make you a fan of me. Hahahaha!
I'm very optimistic about the success of the SuperSoup in mass production and already in my dream, I'm designing the specification and operational process...I just cannot wait!
Guys, you surely need to try this! Since its the season in which olives are abundant in Bangladesh, I would recommend you to add some bits of olive before serving. It does enhance the taste quite a bit.
The bones from chicken alone amounts to 26 billion kg per year worldwide, the monetary value of which is around $52 billion. Bones are mostly leftovers in our everyday meals despite the fact they are rich in some minerals and nutrients vital for growth. Is there any way to make use of these large amount of bones and turn them into large amount of rich nutrients to improve the health of the undernourished people in the world?
