APPetizer

Want to become rich, let Appetizer control your fridge!

Our project is aiming to motivate people to stop wasting food, by helping them keep track of the food in their fridge.

Use Case

The app is designed for cell phone users that are interest in minimizing waste or saving money. After downloading the app from a common app store, the user will be able to set up a profile with the option to choose certain allergies or special diets. In order to track financial savings through the app the user is asked to estimate how much he/she spends on food. Food in the fridge can be saved within the app and updated if something has been wasted or eaten. Shortly before something is about to go bad the app will remind the user and recommends recipes that include the kind of food that is about to be wasted and the information from the user profile. At the end of the month the amount of food wasted is estimated and the amount of money saved is shown within a statistic.

Potential

As some people don’t see their relation with food being wasted, our app underlines what advantages reducing food waste has to them. Our app users will be stimulated to waste less food benefiting their wallet. It will both help single people and couples, sometimes having too much food bought, as bigger families or students in crowded student houses, where a lack of organisation can easily lead to food waste. Instead of putting a spotlight on the benefits reducing food waste has on global aspects like the environment, it primarily focusses on the user’s advantage of saving money. The app should attract as many people as possible to effectively reduce food waste amongst the consumers, or in other words: to change the world.

Business Case

The problem that Appetizer addresses is that of food-wasting, mainly in first-world countries through the use of an app. The app is simple in design and limited to three main features (statistics, reminders, and away-from-home access to your fridge inventory). Such simplicity allows for a wider range of users and reduces app costs. To make it appealing for the user, the app itself will be free of charge. As such, in-app advertising will be the main source of funding.

Objectives:

  1. Raise awareness to the problem of food-wasting through the easy-to-use, free Appetizer app.
  2. Actively prevent food from being cast away uneaten, by helping people organize their fridges and minds through the app.
  3. Illustrate the money-food wasting correlation to increase people's motivation to join the Appetizer network.

Extended Deadline :)

Met up for our last minute pitch today and figured out we had enough time for a cup of tea!!

Our Mission

We seek to fight food wasting. Using simple and present-day technology, we aim to raise awareness to the problem and offer simple yet effective means to fight it - specifically in western societies - through the use of the Appetizer app.

Our Background

We are three students, all originally from different countries, namely from Israel, Germany and Belgium, but currently studying in Utrecht. Part of our group (Carmel and Patricia) is following the science track at the University College in Utrecht (UCU) and the one left (Iris) studies Medicine at Utrecht University. It is not our study programs that connects us, but our eagerness to change the world one day. All three interested in food and its worldwide problems, we want to get closer to a world with no (or definitely less) hunger. Finding out that one third of all the food being produced is actually wasted, made us determined to lay the focus on food waste. We think food waste plays a huge role in the current hunger problem, which will only become a more important factor with the expected population growth. In short, we want to deal with the problem of food waste, specifically by its reduction at consumer’s level.
