AquaGreen

Changing the world one roof at a time.

AquaGreen is a space-efficient, and economical vertical aquaponics system for urban communities, ensuring fresh, and organic produce.

Use Case

The exponentially growing urban population is causing producers to adulterate up to 90% of all food supply coming to Dhaka. AquaGreen’s primary target group is this large urban populace, who live in buildings with unused spaces on rooftops. One major psychographic trait is they are health-conscious, and want safe food on their table. So, access to fresh, organic, and affordable produce will be a key reason for availing our services. 65% of the building owners have plans to initiate food gardening on their rooftops, and in 90% of the cases, someone in the family is available to look after the garden. They can even hire us for the maintenance of the system. AquaGreen aims to solve the food adulteration problem, and meet the need for food safety, and nutrition.

Potential

A vertical aquaponics system is cheaper and more space-efficient, and provides 10 times the yield of traditional ones. The low costs are due to locally sourced bamboo structure, coconut-husk filter, and recycled plastic barrels as fish tanks. AquaGreen provides fresh, organic, and unadulterated food at minimal cost, reducing malnutrition, and finding resourceful use for unused urban spaces. By making cities more self-reliant, AquaGreen intends to revolutionize urban food distribution network, ease the pressure on diminishing arable lands, and empower urban communities. The potential market size for AquaGreen just in Dhaka City is $11.7 million. All in all, AquaGreen’s main objective is to attain economic, social, and environmental sustainability, as the company grows in the future.

Business Case

AquaGreen’s primary target group consists of house-owners from middle to higher income groups in the urban areas, who have an unmet need for unadulterated, fresh food supply. The core value is a space-efficient, easy-to-maintain aquaponics system, costing only $39 per unit. Augmented values include maintenance services costing only $2-3 per month, with supplies of plant seeds, fish fries, and fish feed. A well-trained sales force is the key distribution channel element, who will go to the house-owners to explain the product, and benefits. Network marketing will be followed, where special members will have exclusive access to new variety of plants, and fish before others, in return for spreading word-of-mouth. Partnership with agricultural experts will be key for innovative R&D activities.

Objectives:

  1. Meeting the demand for unadulterated food supply in the urban market by delivering fresh, and organic produce at an affordable price.
  2. Empowering the urban community to become self-sufficient in terms of food production, and nutritional requirements.
  3. Utilizing the unused urban space by ensuring the maximum possible production of food, using the least amount of space.

Prepping for a big day tomorrow!

We consulted with experts from various fields in the past few days, and sketched up a model for the prototype. Spent all day all over the city and the outskirts on market research. Gained a lot of practical experience in the process.

With AquaGreen, we believe in changing the world, one roof at a time! And we're heading towards that with a big step tomorrow. Can't contain all the excitement!

Our Mission

AquaGreen aims to empower the urban communities to become self-sufficient in terms of food production, with a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable solution. Because we believe that the future of food lies not in mass production, but in production by the mass.

Our Background

Different in expertise, similar in our vision, we are a team of five dynamic individuals. Ifteker, the natural leader, is the linchpin of the team with expertise in designing and video making. He has already started two small-scale local ventures and is well-aware about the know-hows of business in the country. Akib is one of the most organized people you will come across and he provides shape and structure to whatever the team does. He also plays the cheerleader role for the team which keeps the team morale high at all times. Inam is an idea machine and also adds value to the team with his flamboyance in speaking. His exceptional sense of humor makes him a very likeable character. Emtiaj is the devil’s advocate in the team and does not disappoint us whenever we are in need of a reality check. His father being the former DMD of Grameen Agricultural Foundation and Grameen Fisheries Foundation, Emtiaj is able to bring in practical insights relevant to the project. Sian is the finance guru and also excels at secondary research. Crunching numbers is his passion and his enthusiasm in finance has led him to get enrolled in the CFA program. The vision we share is to contribute to the society and the people around us in the best way possible. We have been constantly on the lookout for viable opportunities and platforms that would help us realize our goal and we saw TFF as such an opportunity. We care about the fact that the people around us are forced to devour poisonous food which are supposed to be healthy and nutritious. We want to ensure food security for all in both quantitative and qualitative aspects. With a sustainable and scalable solution to the problem, we aim to establish a venture that would help us attain the goal we share, and directly contribute to the society at large.
