Blume Microfarms are modular hydroponic greenhouses infused with smart technology that makes home farming possible for everyone.

Use Case

At Blume Microfarms we aim to make farming simple enough that anyone can grow their own food at home. With an easy to use smartphone app, users can monitor and control their growing environment from anywhere. By utilizing hydroponic technology, our microfarms allow users to maximize the efficiency of their space while using less water and fertilizer than traditional farming methods. This makes the system especially appealing to those in places where water use is restricted or urban areas where growing space is limited. The potential for year-round crop production will also appeal to users in seasonal climates who could take advantage of the system to be able to harvest more times through the year.

Potential

Blume Microfarms will allow people to take control of their food by offering them the ability to grow their own produce year-round. In doing so, Blume hopes to reduce some of the environmental strain caused by current agricultural production and distribution methods, while at the same time, increasing consumer access to nutritious food. We hope our system pushes the envelope of agricultural technology to give people a stable platform through which they can grow their own food regardless of environmental conditions and free of pests. By combining sensors with equipment to monitor and control variables such as temperature, moisture, sunlight, water level, EC, and Ph, we hope to give users access to a rich dataset from which they can learn and optimize plant growth.

Business Case

Blume hopes to use the Thought For Food Challenge as a means to gain momentum for an upcoming Kickstarter campaign. The primary marketplace for selling our product will be online through the Blume Microfarms website. We will begin with one basic unit design but plan to develop variations and add-ons in order to better suit individual consumer needs. We also hope to take advantage of technology we have developed in the process of developing our product in order to sell components to the hydroponics industry.

Objectives:

  1. Spark interest in home food production by making it easy enough that anyone can successfully grow their own food
  2. Allow those with limited space or varying climates the ability to grow food by developing an adaptable system for year-round food production
  3. Decrease resource use by utilizing hydroponic technologies and increasing local food production.

Update: 01/08/16 We spoke with hydroponic/aquaponic experts from Tulsa Community College. Their team has over 20 years experience with hydroponics and are willing to give us feedback to help us further perfect our design.

Not only will our growing systems provide you with an easy space to grow, but they will also provide you with a powerful set of tools that will allow you to control and monitor various aspects of your plants' environment allowing you to develop, perfect and capitalize on your own or others' growing techniques to allow you to grow delicious and healthy plants.

Our Background

We have brought together a team of Design, Software Development, Electrical Engineering, Agricultural, and Agricultural Economics specialist to help us develop an innovative state of the art system. Our fundamental principles align very well with the TFF challenge and we hope to push the envelope of agricultural innovation to enable small growers to maximize efficiency.
