To produce large quantities of quality cockroaches that can sustain livestock production and also other sectors of the economy through mass cockroach rearing, processing and distribution of the final products and establishment of partnerships with various stakeholders for a continued product improvement.
We are a team of 5 students (of different academic disciplines) from Makerere University. We are passionate about mass rearing of naturally existing livestock feed -cockroaches and using them as an alternative feed for livestock. We have so far won a US$600 for conducting feed analysis and community perception towards using cockroaches as livestock feed. This idea is driven by the fact that climate change impacts are becoming immense and also waste generation is increasing with increasing human population. We intend to rear cockroaches through imitation of their wild habitats and using food waste-preferably fruit waste to feed cockroaches , process them and sell them to the livestock farmers like those engaged in poultry production, piggery among others. Other markets shall be pharmaceutical industries, research institutions and conservationists. A platform for exchange of information with the clients shall be established and shall be open to allow for product improvement.
