Plough

Share. Grow. Prosper

An online platform that lets farmers rent equipment from those who own the machineries for more efficient farming.

Use Case

Arijit, a Bangladeshi farmer, earns a living by growing crops on his land. He cannot afford an water pump or a harvester and rely on human labour resulting in declining yield. This is a very common for any small-scale farmers in South Asia. Lack of advanced machineries and depending solely on human labour to complete all the agricultural tasks results in inefficiencies leading to lower yield of crops every year. With our farming machinery sharing platform, PLOUGH, Arijit and many other farmers like him can rent the required machines from others rather than buying them since that will not be cost efficient for any small-scale farmer. He could simply go to the app or website and search for the equipment he needs and rent it for the predetermined price for the required number of days.

Potential

Plough strive to create a strong community built upon equipment sharing. This will bridge the ill-equipped, hard-working farmers and people who own the machineries. With Plough farmers are also equipped with more advanced equipment that will boost the performance and process resulting in greater yield. People who rent the machineries will also be able to profit on the side. Farmers can also be able to focus on seasonal crops which they weren’t able to because of the availability of machineries needed only for that time. Area of farmable land is constantly decreasing due to population explosion. If we are to feed 9billion people, we have to make use of the land available to its fullest potential. If implemented properly we believe Plough will do exactly that, saving the world from hunger.

Business Case

The business model is very simple. When an owner posts the equipment they want to rent out, the price is also posted along with the equipment. Farmers interested to use that equipment for the given price then contacts the owner through the app via call or message. For every transaction, we will get a certain fee which is a certain percentage of the rent. This fee will be paid by the owner of the equipment. For farmers who are not “tech-savvy” there will be toll free number through which they can contact us for any kind of assistance; may it be learning how to use the website/app or finding a machinery.

Objectives:

  1. Increasing agricultural efficiency by increasing yield of crops
  2. Increase access to advanced farming equipment for small scale farmers
  3. Creating a community of farmers through resource sharing

Our Mission

As of 2016, 47% of the labor force is engaged in the agriculture sector in Bangladesh. We have a lot of small scale farmers, especially women, who hold less than 2 hectors of land. Because of the small size, they cannot afford the modern machinery to increase productivity. They are using orthodox and traditional means of cultivation and, as a result, the farmland remains under-utilized. Our mission will be to provide an online platform through which these ill-equipped but hard-working farmers of our country as well as farmers of other developing nations can rent newer and technologically advanced farming machinery, which in turn would lead to a greater yield of crops. We hope that through our idea we can increase the global food production and thus take a huge step towards eradicating world hunger.
