Use Case

RB+ is a rice bran-based tablet that integrates seamlessly into diverse global diets. We have demonstrated that rice bran is a practical addition to African and Latin American diets, and can be easily incorporated into Asian, North American, European diets as well. In the tablet format, RB+ can easily be added to foods, beverages, or consumed by itself. This flexible application makes it an appropriate supplement for all ages, infant to elderly, enhancing overall immunity and aiding in prevention of the complex burdens of diarrheal disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Our tablets provide a consistent quantity, known to be tolerable by infants, and can be easily scaled to be effective for children and adults.

Potential

RB+ is a platform for innovation that elevates the health properties of traditional foods using modern food technology and cutting-edge nutrition research. Rice is produced on 6 continents and feeds half of humanity. Rice bran, a lesser-known product of the milling process, is typically discarded or used as animal feed. However, rice bran is nutrient-dense and has great potential in addressing the dual-burden of disease challenging societies and straining economies. RB+ transforms this product into a rice bran-based tablet that can be easily incorporated into modern diets worldwide. The tablet delivery system of RB+ also allows for further innovation in formulation, such as probiotic fermentation or addition of legume derivatives, to synergistically improve the health of individuals.

Business Case

Rice is produced on 6 continents, so rice bran is readily available at a low cost for RB+ production. The potential of RB+ in disease prevention, as well as waste reduction from rice processing, aligns with the interests of Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Environment worldwide, and other stakeholders dedicated to health promotion and sustainability. To promote product acceptance and distribution, we will continue to foster relationships with community health workers and collaborate closely with local governments and businesses. RB+ can be incorporated into commercial products to elevate the health of existing foods and promote sustainable business practices. Ultimately, RB+ will be produced and distributed at a local level to economically benefit families as well.

Objectives:

  1. To deliver nutrient-dense rice bran and elevate the health of traditional, everyday foods.
  2. To target the dual-burden of disease (spanning starvation to obesity) affecting the world by harnessing the health potential of rice bran.
  3. To reduce waste from the rice post-harvest process by repurposing rice bran into a human food source.

Our expertise across human and veterinary medicine, nutrition, toxicology, microbiology, and agriculture creates unique capacity for sustainable food solutions. We aim to innovate rice food systems for our rising global population by leveraging rice bran, an underutilized byproduct.
