Use Case

More than 100 million tons of grain are lost yearly to insects, diseases, and weeds in Asian tropical rice fields. Up until now, pesticides is the only solution. Under the Pesticides Act 1974, most dangerous pesticides have been banned. However, this highly acute toxin is still widely applied in rice farms in Malaysia. It is crucial to have a smarter way to repel pests in agricultural field. riceSonic is an electronic pest control device which emits ultrasonic wave to remove pests in paddy fields. Unlike commonly used pesticides, riceSonic is a perfect solution to reduce chemical dependency in agricultural land. With today’s advancement in electronics, the device has low start-up cost and affordable to the farmers. It is a smarter farming solution for brighter future.

Potential

Region-wide rice yield loss due to pests was estimated around 37%. Farmers usually spend thousands dollar yearly for toxic pesticide. With the proliferation of electronic technologies in recent years, a simple, low cost electronic device that control pests in the field could be revolutionary for agricultural industry. riceSonic emits ultrasonic wave in certain range of frequency that will affect the auditory sense of the pest by making them uncomfortable and move away from the crops. Imagine that 30% yield loss per paddy plot due to pest could be recovered every year. Furthermore, with one time investment of smart devices like riceSonic, the yearly cost spent for chemicals and pesticides could be saved. This smart technologies helps farmers produce more food while saving the environment.

Business Case

riceSonic could be purchased and installed by farm owners privately or through contract services. We may offer online consultation, on-side installation and on-demand maintenance by authorized dealers. Private owners could own and used rice Sonic over seasons with minimum maintenance cost. Small scale farmers could enroll contract services hired by consortium or government subsidized cooperatives. As the market continues to grow, we look forward to ally with prospective suppliers who offer the greatest potential in innovation, optimization of manufacturing costs and logistics processes. Our concept can be further developed through R&D partnership with research and agricultural agencies. As the product reliability is proven, the usage can be expended to other agricultural crops worldwide.

Objectives:

  1. To increase rice production by eliminating pest in the field using green technology.
  2. Develop electronic pest control devices in paddy field to replace harmful chemicals or pesticides and help save the environment.
  3. Expand the electronic pest control device to other agricultural crops to help increase yield, hence help to feed 9+ billion in 2050.

Real application of riceSonic in paddy field

This is the real application of riceSonic in paddy field.

We decide to hang the riceSonic device to ease the maintenance works of paddy plot before planting season. The riceSonic device is hang close enough to each other to produce overlap waves and cover the whole area of the paddy plot. This device could power up by solar energy and is also waterproof.

On 25th December 2016, we went to visit the paddy farm at Sungai Besar, Selangor, Malaysia. We met with the farmers and interviewed them. We told them about our electronic pest control device which is invented as an alternative to pesticides. We showed them a demonstration video about our electronic pest control device concept. We also showed them on how to use the device. We received a very good feedback and the farmers were also excited to use our device in their paddy plot. They also gave some suggestions for improvement. :)

Our Mission

Our mission is to help farmers around Asia, especially Malaysia to increase up their yield and eliminate the problems that occurred. We want to encourage the family farmers around Asia to grow up their crop without worries and to increase the yield around their communities. Since, they are the key of good quality food for the nation, we want to ensure they can continuously work to protect soil, air, water and biodiversity in order to produce high quality and healthy food for everyone.

Our Background

We Hopper, consist of five members from the Bachelor of Engineering (Agricultural and Biosystems) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). We are totally encouraged by our lecturer, Dr. Samsuzana Abd Aziz from our department. The reason why we are joining Thought For Food (TFF) Challenge because we have the curiosity to know and learn about the problems faced by the farmers around Asia. We want to help by giving them a better workplace to work on. As we are concerned, we know that our country rely too much on the imported agriculture products and we want to change that. We want Malaysia to stand on their own feet to produce healthy and good quality food to the community.
