Just Plant

Yin-Yang Food facilitates the experience to plant food at home using technology to control water, soil, humidity, and nutrients.

Use Case

We understand that people face many difficulties to experience agriculture at home. It happens due to several reasons, such as limited time, low access to resources, and a lack of knowledge. Yin-Yang Food is offering a low-cost solution where people can plant a seed into a compartment, then set a configuration through an intuitive interface to make our system control the environment and make the plant grow automatically. Once the plant reaches the germination stage, the plant can be transferred to a final place. We do not intend to create a product to control all stages of the plant, but we are interested in changing the living standards inserting an agricultural experience and inspire a new culture where people can plant and cultivate their food at home.

Potential

Food insecurity, malnutrition, and hunger continue to be a characteristic of the developing countries. One way to solve this problem is to stimulate families to plant their own food. But in many situations, this process is obscure and due to many reasons; people are discouraged to exploring agriculture in their own home. In most situations, they do not even start. We intend to facilitate the people access to agricultural practices, providing a product where they can experience the process to plant and inspire a new culture. Our prototype intends to be easily assembled, and the primary purpose of our project is stimulating, facilitating, disseminating, and demystifying the culture of agriculture within families using a low-cost solution.

John and Anna are interested in start to planting food, but due to time limitation, lack of knowledge, and space at their house, they did not start this practice. Also, another family wants to start to plant their food, but they do not have enough money to invest. Besides that, they do not know how to start. In both situations, people have an interest in developing the practice to planting their food, but they do not know how to start.
Finally, Freitas's family tried to plant their food but the plant died because they did not create a good environment with the right amount of water, light, and nutrients. One device to help them out would be very convenient.

After the explore mode, we identified that some companies are trying to create solutions addressed to home agriculture. However, all solutions are expensive or do not use electronic resources properly.

After exploring different proposals and solutions, find below a few insights generated at the beginning of our project:

1.Agriculture can be easy. But it is necessary to create a new culture about plant food at home.

2. Technology should be offered at low cost in order to represent a significant impact on agriculture.

3. People want a practical solution, but something that can justify the investment.

4. People need something easy to use and manage. Our solution must be independent and intuitive.

Our Mission

Food insecurity, malnutrition, and hunger continue to be a characteristic of the developing countries. One way to solve this problem is to stimulate families to plant their own food. But in many situations, this process is obscure and due to conflict of interest, people are discouraged from exploring agriculture in their own home. We intend to facilitate the people access to agricultural practices, providing a product where they can experience the process to plant and replicate it in the future. We intend to offer an alternative to people produce their food on a very small scale. Our project is based on the principle that each family should be able to plant their food with support from technologies and using renewable energy to maintain a sustainable cycle. We will design a system able to maintain the plant life cycle in small places. Our system will provide water, nutrients, and monitor temperature in order to help the seed grows in any location.

Our Background

Originally, we are from a small city in Brazil within Amazonia. We grew up in a place where agriculture was strong in every house and communities along the rivers. After starting our engineering life at university and industry, and get an international experience, we noticed that many people do not have the practice to plant their own food. Today, we are pursuing our studies on engineering, and we want to use our expertise to use engineering and technology to help families across the world to develop the agricultural culture and provide this experience to individuals. ====================================== Who are we? ====================================== ::Claudio Freitas:: Claudio holds Bachelor’s degree in Control Engineering at Higher Education Institute of Amazonia (2011), and he holds his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Campinas (2014). Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. at Purdue University in Engineering Education. He has experience as a visiting graduate researcher at the University of New Mexico (USA) and professional experience at K&A Wireless as a research associate in Albuquerque (USA). Additionally, he has professional experience at Hitachi Automotive Systems America as an Intern in Research & Development in Detroit (USA) and Senior Product Engineer at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in Brazil. He served as the President of Student Platform for Engineering Education Development (SPEED). Before joining SPEED, Claudio served as co-founder of the Student Chapter of the Brazilian Automation Society. Among his many achievements, his project was awarded the Best Student Initiative for Engineering Students promoted by Cengage Learning. He received the Leadership Award by ISTEC, and the Young Scientist Award supported by International Society for Engineering Education (IGIP). His project with electrical vehicle at the Unicamp E-Racing team was awarded with the first place at the national competition (Brazil) and international competition (USA), and he was selected in the Future Entrepreneurs Program promoted by Redemprendia. ====================================== ::Samuel Filgueira:: Kettering University (USA): Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, non-degree international student August 2014 – June 2015. Yale University (USA): Visiting Student in Research: Worked with the fabrication and design of artificial micro microstructures (MEMS) made of metallic glasses. Federal University of Campina Grande (Brazil): Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering: March 2012 – June 2018 (expected graduation date). 4-year High School integrated to Vocational Technical Course in Industrial Mechanics: March 2008 - December 2011. Samuel has a strong interest in mechanical integration and its elements. He has international experience in engineering. He contributed to developing unmanned small scale aircrafts addressed to national SAE competitions. ===================================== ::William Freitas:: William is an sophomore engineering student in mechanical engineering. He has interest in mechanical simulations, and how to simulate virtually electronic components in order integrate into mechanical parts. He has experience with sensors and CAD systems.
