Eat Your Straw

Small entity, big impact!

Eat Your Straw is a edible, zero-waste straw made of edible starch made to fight hunger and the environmental effects of plastic.

Use Case

‘Eat Your Straw’ will be developed for the general market for everyday use. It will be used like a plastic straw, but it can be consumed making it a zero-waste straw. It will be introduced into ‘on-the-go’ food outlets like Starbucks or other high-end coffee shops. Even if it is not consumed, it is completely biodegradable. Apart from the direct use as a straw, it can be designed to have certain nutrients specifically for certain targeted populations. It therefore, can be used as a nutrient provider that also is a tool for hygiene and convenience.

Potential

There is massive potential for edible straws. With similar usability to plastic straws, they will become direct competitors of them. The production of these straws is very scalable as it uses a simple technology. As the business grows and demand increases, there is the potential to make significant in-roads into the dominance that plastic straws have in the market place. The edible straws also offer the ability to be a nutrient carrier for some vitamins and minerals that are needed in different areas. This simple approach to solving this huge problem has widespread applicability. The low cost nature of the base material and mass production means that the price point can be kept down, this is key to its success in realising its potential.

Business Case

‘Eat Your Straw’ is a commercial business with strong social ideals. It will go on to be a serious commercial business, while also targeting populations that may be lacking certain nutrition. To ensure successful product development, awareness and communication, partnership with academia, Climate KIC, government bodies and environmental NGOs will be conducted. ‘Eat Your Straw’ will also be fortified with nutrients and for this, business can be conducted with World Food Organization by UN, UNICEF or humanitarian agencies. Additionally, it is easy to be transported because of its lightweight and small size. For every 100 packs of straws sold by the business, straws will be specially designed for an underdeveloped population and donated.

Objectives:

  1. To use straws, as tools to provide specific nutrition to targeted populations and combat hunger.
  2. To lower environmental impact of plastic straws by assembling a zero-waste edible straw.
  3. To design an inexpensive straw that is accessible to all.

Straws are destroying the planet and we don't even realise it. We want to make zero-waste straws. Yummy and healthy for everyday use.

Our Mission

Our mission is to take edible straws away from being a novel approach to becoming a global replacement to the plastic straws. A big impact is created by something so insignificant. This is what we want to target. The use of plastic straws has been on a steady rise, and recycling it is difficult because of it's size. We want to focus on production of straws using already existing ingredients and technology to provide the same function with no waste. We want to increase the value of these straws by fortifying them with nutritional supplements. The development edible straws made of pure edible starch that is extruded and coated can replace the use of currently used plastic straws . These straws can provide utility and health benefits simultaneously.

Our Background

We are a group of three students studying Food Innovation and Product Design. We are passionate about Food and everything that goes with it. We are specialising in innovative food packaging. Getting inspired by the devastating state of the oceans and landfills with disposable food packaging, we were on a look out for solutions. We stumbled upon the effect of plastic straws and took it up as our challenge. We enjoy integrating a design thinking process to bring out innovative ways to reach our goal. We ultimately want to replace the plastic straw. Zero-waste is our future.
