Making fruits and vegetables last longer

Voko is a mechanism in form of a bag that preserves fruits and vegetables through an affordable, eco-friendly and conservants-free process

Use Case

Voko works on the excessive food purchasing issue that creates a surplus at their homes. Users don't usually end up eating all they have bought, which drives them to throw food to waste in a short term of time. Currently, the most common way to preserve food is refrigeration, but it comes with additional costs of energy, and the fact that not all the households can afford refrigeration technology, even those who have refrigerators face the issue of rapid food-deterioration. This creates an adverse scenario for users, forcing them to make multiples trips to the supermarket in order to supply home consumption, or to decrease the amount of food bought. Voko will tackle down these problems at an affordable price in a conservants-free process.

Potential

Due to the rapid deterioration process of fruits and vegetables, it is more difficult to have nutritious meals on our daily lives, we resign to consume unhealthy food, only because it is easy to find. Food-preservation is a known global challenge in many places. Families struggle with the lack of diversity on food-stock. Voko will reduce the time invested on trips to the market and lower the surplus generated after buying excessive amounts of food, thus, preventing food from going to waste. Voko will change the world’s perspectives of food preservation by ensuring people the access to a fresh and balanced diet, without the need to appeal to excessively expensive technology on preservation or the use of more complex methods which transform food and do not allow people to eat them fresh.

Business Case

Voko is an entrepreneurship that will manufacture and assemble bags, an innovative way to preserve food. Our business strategy is focused on providing costumers a high quality and affordable product, available for the client on markets, supermarkets and other retail stores. In the same way, online stores will be implemented, for local and foreign demand. We create a link between our costumer and us, by delivering our 100% eco-friendly paper every six months (useful life time), since it’s vital for the proper preservation of fruits and vegetables. We look forward to become a high-scale enterprise, this is why we expect to attract investment in order to improve the quality of our product, to increase the volume of production and, at the same time, to create jobs for locals.

Objectives:

  1. To preserve fruits and vegetables fresh and good for consumption, through an environmentally-friendly and conservants-free process
  2. To prevent users from stocking unnecessary quantities of fruits and vegetables, therefore, decreasing food waste around the world
  3. To reduce the time and money spent by users on multiple trips to the supermarket in order to supply home consumption

New Sketch

After a couple of hours of designing and discussing, we incorporated parts of the different ideas we came out with, and of course the valuable feedback of the experts for our logo.
Now we feel more confident with our new one.

Our Mission

Our mission is to innovate on traditional food-preservation methods, through a new, highly efficient and environmentally friendly process that ensures the deceleration of the decomposition of fruits and vegetables, which are the most nutritious food, and, at the same time, the most likely to deteriorate in a short period of time. We, as a Team, have developed a mechanism in form of a bag, made out of low cost and eco-friendly materials, demonstrating that our project is committed with the future by providing households with a unique and affordable tool, that will tackle down food preservation issues which are going to afflict world population by 2050.

Our Background

As global citizens, we are concerned about the amount of food lost and wasted all around the world. Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted, according to the FAO. Food is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain, from initial production down to final household consumption. We live in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, on the eastern region of Bolivia. This zone has a highly humid and warm environment which is favourable for the growth and production of fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, this climate conditions seriously affect the conservation of food. This fact drove us to analyse our situation and look for a solution to this problem. For this reason, we are convinced that in the future the concern will not be directly related to food-production, but highly tied to the huge amount of food that goes to waste due to the deterioration of fruits and vegetables, no matter the climate conditions. Thus, we arrived to the conclusion that people by 2050 will face harder conditions than the ones that afflict us today; which is why VoKo, among other bold and innovative ideas, will be the key to solve these major adversities.
