Our Mission

Home Farmers team is a group of high performing individuals from different backgrounds, and brought together by tertiary education. Onyedika, Thomas and Kabo all study at African Leadership University, Mauritius Campus. While Onyedika is a Nigerian majoring in Electrical Engineering, Kabo and Thomas are from Botswana and Uganda respectively, and both majoring in Business Management. Our mission is to leverage on agricultural resources in our communities to promote food security and sustainable living from local to continental level.

Our Background

Africa is a continent full of resources and potentials. One of the most obvious ones being Agricultural potential. It saddens us to see the poverty and hunger in our communities despite the resources around us to harness and improve our living conditions. We feel like we are not empowered to make long-lasting positive impacts in our communities. Subsistence Agriculture is still practiced on large scales in our communities. And we wonder how that is supposed to reduce the hunger in our communities, our nations, and our continent Africa. Onyedika, a team member, comes from Nigeria, and Thomas, from Uganda. But the stories of the hardship and hunger in the lower and middle classes of our respective societies are similar. We are students of African Leadership University, and here, we are groomed to be entrepreneurial leaders that will help propel Africa. Our life goals and dreams have grown after reflections about ourselves and our communities. We will not live to only enrich ourselves and our families. We'll live to improve our communities and the state of living in them. How do we plan to do this? In brief, we would start with working together with farmers (especially local/subsistent farmers) even as we are farmers, getting their products to markets and improving/expanding their farming practices for a greater yield. These will be supplemented with our farming operations also to provide affordable food in our communities. When that relationship with a large network of local farmers is established, and new/improved markets in form of retail stores are instituted, we would expand our operations to include Agro Industries to carry out complex processing of agro-products from both our farms and local farmers. At any end, which would be the beginning of another stage, we would be promoting agriculture/food security, providing employment, and boosting the economy of regions, amongst others. We are participating in this challenge because we believe we'll gain more insights from the interaction with other teams, have access to resources that will help us develop our idea. This participation is also a good opportunity to focus more on our idea for it's improvement, and hopefully winning a prize if not the grand prize, to facilitate project/idea execution.
