Insuring Your Right To Food Security

To adequately prepare farmers for unpredictable disasters via farm insurance and provide nutrient enriched fertilizers and feed.

Use Case

Imagine there is a livestock or arable farmer, that manages his or her farm in a high risk area, such as near a river, where flooding may occur or in the caribbean, that is prone to hurricanes during the rainy season. They are barely making ends meet and cannot set aside money to insure their farm in the case of a disaster. If a disaster passes, they are left in a state of devastation as they have no insurance and no money available to them to restart their farm. This is where we come in, a "pay-as-you-go" type of insurance. Here, farmers accumulate money for their farms simply by purchasing cheaper, high quality feed and fertilizers that they would already spend money on. Finally, a percentage of these funds will be reinvested for the farmers to benefit from in the latter years.

Potential

Our concept is different because it's similar to a bridge. A bridge which will provide farmers in countries without crop insurance the ability to protect their crops whilst having access to materials that they need. As well as allowing those who are unable to afford crop insurance in countries that offers it the means to protect their crops and without going through the hassle that actual insurance has. This concept can slowly introduce crop insurance to a country. Alternatively, it can be used in countries’ where crops are too high risk for insurance companies to cover them. Considering that we re-invest a percentage of the money we receive, the farmer has another source of income as well as crop protection. On top of that, there is still a profit available to us at the end of the day.

Business Case

Our business is in essence a servitization of products. Agricultural fertilizer and livestock feed produced by our company are sold to farmers at an affordable price, making it a cheaper alternative and allowing it to compete with other agricultural products on the market. The service provided is insurance to farmers that purchase our product, as a percentage of our revenue is saved for them to claim in the event of a disaster while part of the percentage is reinvested to accumulate over time. Thus, our company provides products needed by large and small scale farmers, insurance in case of an emergency, and invests on their behalf to ensure their financial security and in turn our own food security

Objectives:

  1. 1. Provide farmers with affordable, hassle free insurance , as they increase the money available for claim based on their purchases.
  2. 2. Reduce the amount of food wasted by using unwanted produce to create our feeds and fertilizers
  3. 3. Supply farmers with high quality feed and fertilizers, infusing the latter with mineral rich pitch lake water for stronger crops.

SKETCHES: Our first few ideas

These are some sketches of our initial idea- weave coconut husks into pockets to slow down infiltration and attach a water collector at the bottom of the device, therefore when it rains water is evenly distributed and plants get the required amount of water needed, the excess water would be collected and recycled.
