To produce low cost,sustainable and high quality fish feed out of duckweed.

Use Case

The major challenges facing fish farming in Tanzania is quality of fish feed and the high cost of production associated with fish feeds. Protein alone represents 50% of this cost. For several decades fish meal and Soy bean meal have been used for as the main source of protein in fish feeds, however, the high price and competition make them unaffordable to poor local fish farmers in Tanzania . In order to enhance fish farming, a search for cheap, sustainable, good quality and locally available feed stuffs is required, the potential ingredient for this is Duckweed(Lemna minor). duckweed has high growth rate and can easily be produced duckweed responds to if grown in fertilized water the crude protein increase up to 41%.

Potential

I.Food security through production of increase nutrition quality of fish flesh for human consumption -specifically increase level of mega 3 fatty acids with ant-oxidant vitamin and solve the disease associated with lack of proper nutrients to under 5 children . II. Employment creation through farming and processing of duckweed (Lemna minor) and fish farming. III. Increase in fish production due low cost of fish feed to tackle sharply declined of wild fish, IV.Increase in per capital income to the community V. Environmental conservation because we replacing the fish meal which its availability contributed to unsustainable exploitation of natural water bodies.

Business Case

Business Model of our concept is " Cut prices to gain an industry share and profit later" After being produced our product will be distributed to the potential customers by our own transportation costs in order to retain potential customers, attracting new customers and increasing the amount of sales also we will cut price in order to gain market share and as our business grow we will invest on technology to speed up customer response. The enterprise plans to use the internet as one of its marketing channels in the future.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide alternative and sustainable fish feed which are cheaply, quality and available to local environment which can lower fish production cost and accessible to local fish farmer in Tanzania.

Our Background

We are team of Students from Tanzania who are studying at Bogor Agriculture University in Indonesia with different education background and experience. Here is our team name, experience and education background Mr. Otaigo is Economist he worked as Public Sectors System Strengthen (PS3) Project District Coordinator. He is also founder of Mentor Tanzania assisting young people to get agribusiness education. He is YALI fellow 2016, and Ashoka Change makers fellow 2016. He graduated at Sokoine University of agriculture with Bsc. Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness and currently pursuing Msc. in Resource and Environment Economics at Bogor Agricultural University. He is very committed to bring about sustainable social change and poverty eradication in Tanzania society. Mr Otaigo is also member of several youth organization Including, Tanzania youth Agripreneurs, YALI RLC Tanzania Chapter, Tanzania US Alumni Association, African Change Makers Network. He has participated in several international conferences, which has exposed and shaped his world view. He therefore, advocate on Employment Initiative and community health. Mr. Stephano Adrian Karoza Mr. Stephano holds MSc. Aquaculture Science from Bogor Agriculture University. He is highly motivated and competent individual with strong interest in community empowerment through fish farming and environmental conservation and management .He has vast experience on organizing farmers’ training and other knowledge exchange activities. He is also researcher with interests in effects of dietary protein levels on Mud crab (Scyllaserrata) and effects of mixed sex in Nile tilapia (O.niloticus) in ponds. He has been involved in developmental project on integrated Tilapia farming in Ukerewe District funded by UNDP Tanzania. Currently he is principle investigator for SNIPH project in Tanzania funded by Newton fund and BBSRC and DFID. we participate in the challenge in order to get knowledge from other young professionals which have diverse background, to create global network with other youth to share knowledge and experience on related subject or topic of interest especially on solving the problem of fish feed . The Fish industry in Tanzania is not well developed. However, Tanzania has substantial potential for development of fish farming due to availability of water resources which includes rivers, lakes, the Indian Ocean, natural and man made dams and other reservoirs in the country. Many regions in Tanzania have good climate that can support aquaculture development and have sufficient water resources for the purpose. In recent years in Tanzania there is decrease in capture fisheries from natural water bodies due to climatic change , environmental pollution and over fishing . Due shortage of fish there is a new trend that fish is mainly consumed by better class of the community. The increasing gap in fish supply and demand in turn increases the price of fish. This significantly reduces fish consumption particularly by the poor community or society that threatens their food security. The current rise of fish price which resulted into the emergence of fish farming, but increases competition for resources, particularly fish feed , water and land. The major challenges facing aquaculture industry in Tanzania is the high cost of production associated with fish feeds. Protein alone represents 50% of this cost; Fish meal is the major source of protein in aquaculture feeds because it is the good source of essential amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins. For several decades fish meal and Soya bean meal have been used for as the main source of protein in fish feeds, however, the high price and competition make then unaffordable to poor local fish farmers in Tanzania . In order to enhance fish farming, a search for cheap, good quality and locally available feed stuffs is required, the potential ingredient for this is Duckweed(Lemna minor). Duckweed is a monocotyledon species of green floating flowering plant of the Lemnaceae family, the plant grow in different tropical climates and has high concentration of trace minerals and pigments especially xanthophylls, beta carotene, the proximate composition is crude protein 24- 41%, crude lipid 3-7%, crude fiber 5-16%, carbohydrate 14.1-43.6% , ash 12-27% by dry weight respectively, duckweed has high growth rate and can easily be produced in earthen and cemented ponds, the crude protein in duckweed responds to the nutrients contents of growing media, if grown in fertilized water the crude protein increase up to 41%. Crude fiber in duckweed can be reduced by hydrolyzing duckweed meal by using sheep rumen liquor enzyme which is a source of alternative materials that are cheap and easily used as a source of hydrolase hence improve digestibility. Duckweed(Lemna minor) as alternative cheaply available source of protein for fish feeds, the project will benefit local poor fish farmers to have access to quality fish feeds which reduce fish production cost For Aquaculture to supply the population growing demand for fish as food to fill the gap in declining yield from capture fisheries, basic but critical information should be available especially regarding feed that are less competitive and of low cost value but with replaceable capacity for fish meal with the aim of making fish to attain table size at reduced culture time and minimum production cost. Utilization of non- conventional protein supplements of plant origin in practical fish that has been at the fore in Tanzania in recent times, it is imperative for such practical diet to contain optimum protein required, essential amino acids and fatty acids. Therefore, the role of Natural water bodies for fisheries to attain food self-sufficiency is sharply declining The fast increase in price and increase in demand of fish provide an opportunity to construct fish pond as an alternative supplier of quality fish through use of alternative fish feed. our idea is to disseminate technology of duckweed production and processing as alternative fish feed and this technology is new to our country.
