Establishing a Micro-Tomato Value Addition Plant

Value Addition;Tomato Juice;Powder;Paste;Pulp;Partially dehydrated tomatoes

Our concept is to start a Tomato Processing Plant to produce tomato juice, powder, paste, pulp and partially dehydrated tomatoes.

Use Case

Mr. Khumalo is a smallholder farmer who specializes grows tomatoes. Each week, he produces 10 tonnes which he supplies to wholesale markets located 30 kilometers away in the capital, Harare (Zimbabwe). Sometimes, markets are flooded as he has to face competition from other local farmers surrounding the capital. As a result, much of the outputs loose freshness, quality and often go bad as he awaits for better market prices. However, now that he has heard about the Tomato processing plant, he now have the opportunity to sent her tomatoes even those which has lost quality and freshness other than throwing them away, and gain good prices. He can also sent 10 tonnes to be processed for value added tomatoes where the processors can only retain 40% of the value added products as payment.

Potential

A Tomato Value Addition Plant can increase access to markets for smallholders which will motivate them to intensify productivity. This can also help to increase incomes for poor smallholder farmers. Incomes are critical in promoting food security. We will reduce post-harvest loses through adding value to excess tomatoes and those that would have lost quality and freshness, thereby reducing food waste at community and global levels. Value added products have a longer shelf life hence this can mitigate food waste. It promotes nutrition since tomato fruits are rich in fiber, contain healthy vitamins and it has no trace of cholesterol. Tomatoes also contain disease fighting phyto-chemicals. Thus, it can help impact the global food space and contribute to feeding the 9+ billion people by 2050

Business Case

If you live in Zimbabwe, Africa or any part of the world where tomatoes are produced in large quantities, then establishing your own tomato processing plant might just be the best business venture you might invest in.The market for processed tomato products is enormous and profitable not only in Zimbabwe but across the continent. The good thing about starting a tomato processing plant is that you could establish your plant in any part of the world where you can easily access tomato farms and cheaper labors and then export your products all of the globe. We generate revenue through selling value added products like tomato puree, powder, paste, pulp and partially dehydrated tomatoes. We also charge farmers a percentage of their outputs to value add their tomatoes.

Objectives:

  1. To minimize post-harvest losses on fresh agro commodities produced by smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe
  2. To add value to tomatoes that are otherwise being traditionally eaten in Zimbabwe and Africa
  3. To increase access to markets for smallholders through strategic partnerships which will encourage them to increase productivity
