Global Foodies: ATTENTION

A birds eye view of the world still shows how it being riddled with and overflowing with challenges for basic livelihood due to high levels of poverty, housing crisis and malnutrition. While malnutrition continues to be a growing problem, the past few years have seen even basic meals become inaccessible thus bringing in focus hunger to be a much larger problem than ever predicted. While there’s no one way to approach essential physical needs across diverse landscapes and communities in developing nations, the first step lies in understanding the issues and to prioritize them accordingly.

With the help of this infographic, we have tried highlighting some of the key issues plaguing developing nations around the world with a special emphasis on minors in distress due to hunger, bearing in mind that the children of today indeed hold the key to tomorrow and need to be protected at the earliest. The Food Gap

It's immensely pitiful that in today's world, we waste enough food to feed the hungry about 3 times over. Our study of the food deficit is astonishing in its own right, and shows us how Hunger stands in todays time. Food loss (which maybe out of our control) and wastage (well within our locus of control) are causing millions to sleep hungry each night. The causes for the same may vary from lack of scientific management, to basic irresponsibility. We thus see the rising of our current Food Gap as the first step towards working towards the Second Sustainable Development Goal of eradicating Hunger by 2030, that is, each of these 870 million have adequate nourishment well within their reach.

"Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.

At the advent of Journey in Thought For Food, its our endeavor to engage in profound reflection on the plight of the hundreds of millions of people who are afflicted by hunger and malnutrition across the world. We hope to capture the worldview towards food at large and as we progress, actively seek out problem areas to understand and solve. As our first step in our Journey with TFF, we see World Food Day 2016 as pertinent occasion to set pretext for it.

World Food Day, October 16th, the day FAO was established on in 1979; is celebrated each year with FAO designating a theme to highlight crucial aspects relating to hunger, food security, and food production for profound deliberation and global ministration. This year’s theme being: “The Climate is Changing. Food and Agriculture must too”, underscores the vastly debilitating effects climate change can play on the 60% increase in food production required to feed 9.6 billion people by 2050.

Underlining the need for food and agricultural systems to sustainably adapt to the jeopardizing effects of Climate change, this World Food Day put special focus on strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers, fishermen and pastoralists: who are being hit hardest by higher temperatures and an increasing frequency in weather-related disasters. The FAO thus seeks to call out for ‘Climate-Smart Agriculture’ technologies to safeguard food in the light of the ever growing demand for food security with substantial portion of the earth’s population vulnerable to succumbing to the bane that hunger is.

Today, we have a look at how World Food Day 2016 was commemorated the world over as depicted in the picture.

We thus encourage all the readers to deliberate, acknowledge, and celebrate the availability of food as it is today, and towards solving the conflicts that are faced by food security. We hope to get the world to be active in the war on hunger and malnourishment, and we seek to be at the forefront of change.
