Digital bank-less saving model for farmers to put money aside using their mobile wallet account, exclusively for input purchase.

Use Case

Mrs. Kazimoto is a farmer and produces Maize. Her land is ‘old’ that can’t produce adequate yield without at least basic inputs.Therefore she do whatever she can to acquire these inputs during the planting season. She Approached the bank but she was dined and decided to borrow money from local moneylenders who charge interest rates higher than commercial rates. Even if she get inputs its not on time and she don't know how and when to use inputs, at the time she monetize harvest and small business she don’t have savings that are specific towards re-investing on her farm she diverted its spending instead of investing in inputs for her future production. KilimoPay will enable her to save her own money for input purchase and Mobile–Phone based advice to ensure the best use of those input.

Potential

78% of Tanzanian are farmer, According to (TCRA 2016) there is 80% Mobile phone penetration, 66% of active population employed in agriculture 32% of smallholder farmer have mobile money account, Only 6% have access to credit from formal financial Institution, KilimoPay solve it by helping unbankable smallholder farmers farmers to save their own money on Mobile wallet account exclusively for input purchase. The access to quality input could potentially, boost yield by 120% with significant increase in food security and income for farming family. This model have direct impact to both actors, it ensure farmers to access quality input and tools and enable Farmer continue to farm during planting season without any interruption and guarantees input suppliers their expected revenues

Business Case

For KilimoPay to operate will partner with mobile network operators for SMS and Mobile Money transfer and trusted input providers for accessing quality and discounted inputs. KilimoPay employs differentiated revenue model, direct revenue model and subsidized model,in direct revenue model smallholder farmers and farmer groups will be charged based on tiered subscription model for the use platform, shared revenue with network providers and the input suppliers will be charged based with commission model, other model are Subsided model-donors/NGO fund the service mainly for developmental purpose or private company fund the service on behalf of the farmers as part of social corporate responsibility (CRS) and third part organization wish to advertise their agriculture product through our system.

Objectives:

  1. To help smallholder farmers to save incrementally over time using their own money and avoid taking stressful loans.
  2. To improve smallholder farmers access to quality and discounted farm inputs
  3. To provide customized input package and timely toiled input use advice at farm level.

Tanzania population is 55,155,473 , 78% are farmers according to Tanzania, Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA 2017) Statistics Report showing that there is 80% Mobile phone penetration, 66% of active population employed in agriculture. NBS report shows that 32% of smallholder farmer have mobile money account and 2% have active traditional bank account and estimated 40% of farmer will have mobile money account by 2025,

When People make list of Agriculture tools probably they forget Including Mobile phone, KilimoPay believe that as In Tanzania 8 of 10 people are farmers, Mobile Phone will transform Agriculture!

Our team is composed of three core members from the same university but different Countries working collaboratively on articulating a vision for developing flexible mobile digital model for farmers.We Believe that Access to input and input use advice for smallholder farmers can serve as a critical catalyst for economic growth and poverty alleviation to Smallholder.Our team made up of Mr Otaigo Elisha, Economist, Mr. Richard Magana, Agronomist and Mr Blair Moses Kamanga , Agri-entrepreneur.
