PAAT SOIL CLINIC

Healthy soils = Healthy plants = High yields

We deliver on-site soil testing services to small holder farmers. Our service is affordable, accessible and provides results in 10minutes.

Use Case

Low soil fertility has become the the single most important factor affecting agricultural productivity in Uganda's smallholder farmer production. This has led to negative consequences particularly decline in farmer output and threatening livelihoods. The existing solutions are research focused, expensive ($14) and lack efficient service delivery models. Fertilizer usage in uganda has also remained low leading to low soil productivity and hence increasing fertilizer usage needs to be backed up by a robust delivery of knowledge and information and practical assessment of the soil needs. However, access to soil testing facilities is a challenge to many farmer's in uganda due to limited knowledge on the need and relevance of profiling soil.

Potential

PAAT shall reduce current service cost by 40% (from $14 to $8.4) through the on-site soil testing innovation, enabling farmers to save $5.6 for fertilizer purchase. The innovation offers affordable, accessible and timely delivery of the recommendations in 10minutes making it 4 times more efficient than the current approaches. 40 farmers shall have access to the service per day as opposed to 10 farmers in the current approaches. This will mean more income to farmers (reduced poverty ) and more food available for consumption (increased food security ) as a result of improved soil productivity.

Business Case

PAAT SOIL CLINIC delivers on-site soil testing services to farmers, it targets 5 million smallholder farmers in uganda and 45 million more in Africa. Our service costs only $8.4, 40% lower than the current market cost ($14), enabling farmers to allocated the saved $5.6 to purchase of fertilizers. Our service is also more affordable, eco-friendly, efficient and accessible. We shall earn revenue through direct sales of the service to the farmer's. PAAT will leverage it's existing network of farmer groups across the country and existing partnerships with NGOs including : CHAIN UGANDA, FARME International and SOILCARES FOUNDATION. After a successful business rollout in uganda, PAAT shall then scale it's innovation to other parts across Africa.

Objectives:

  1. “To promote incomes and food security through improved farm productivity and access to farming information’’
  2. “To improve soil productivity and yield among smallholder farmers through soil testing innovation"
  3. “To reduce the current service cost by 40% and increase access to the service by smallholder farmers by 75% per day.
