UPROOT Aquaponics

Bringing Lives out of poverty and hunger

UPROOT is an enterprise that aims to end malnutrition, hunger & poverty affecting more than 7 million Filipino children aged 5 years below.

Use Case

1 out of 3 Filipino children suffer from poverty, hunger and malnutrition. Children aged 5 years and below are the ones severely affected by this. They go to bed hungry and have really nothing to look forward to. Children as young as 2 start to work or beg in the streets just so they can have something to eat. Unemployment and inflation has gone up year after year. Food security has always been a problem especially now due to climate change. On the other end of the spectrum you have people who can afford to buy the best vegetables in expensive super markets and organic weekend markets but unfortunately it is still not enough, they want something extremely fresh, like literally picking it off a plant.

Potential

Poverty, hunger and malnutrition is like a disease being passed on to generation to generation. This ugly cycle has got to stop. Through Community Shared Aquaponics, not only are we providing a sustainable communal food system to the community, improving drastically their nutrition especially their children, but also in the long run provide marginalized communities access to auxiliary income by connecting them to business establishments such as hotels and restaurants where they can sell their produce fresh and on a regular basis.

Business Case

We have two go-to-market strategy. 1) Selling of our individual aquaponic systems (B2C) at $340. We have sold more than 120 units so far, and everytime we sell 50 units we will put up a communal food system to our partner communities. 2) Our Enterprise Model (B2B) where we plan to setup aquaponic systems to businesses such as hotels and restaurants. Giving their customers access to fresh, nutritious and quality produce grown within the walls of their establishments. Realistically our target is to get upto 5 new enterprises per month giving us a total of 60 enterprises per year.

Objectives:

  1. Aquaponics is only a tool to reach our objectives, our main objective is to teach children at a young age about self sufficiency
  2. It will also teach our beneficiaries how to properly manage the resources given to them and how they can benefit from it.
  3. Provide marginalized communities a sustainable food source and auxiliary income through community shared aquaponics
