zahr smart farm units

solar powered farm units that allow growers produce high yields of food crops.

Use Case

Amina works for an organisation that caters to the issues of creating efficient food supply chain and sustainable means of nutrition for refugees in Somalia. however due to climate change problems such as drought, lack of water and the aftermath of war and unrest that have effected any means of traditional farming. Amina began searching for new ways to enable food production and this is where Zahr smart farm units came in. Zahr smart farm units are built-in hydroponics farming system within a shipping container and are fully solar powered. Each container is fitted with innovative climate technology and growing equipments needed for high yield production of vegetables and crops growth all year.

Potential

the current famine in Africa is leading to the death of people at an astronomical rate, many of whom are young children. Added to this are the issues of war and unrest where warlords control food sources with the understanding that access to food is very important. The challenge with agriculture in these areas, besides the concerns about security, is the lack of clean water and natural resources to enable food growth. Zahr smart farm unit addresses these issues by rapidly deploying our hydroponic growth units this might be the answer to these challenges and hopefully as we grow our deployment units will be used as a tool in the future by aid and military organisations.

Business Case

Zahr smart farm aims to carry out intensive and high turnover production, off a small area, while providing work and leadership experience for women, refugees, farmers and disabled persons. Zahr smart farm is a combination of cutting edge, high quality, efficient food technology and production. The hydroponic industry has documented higher yield in comparison to the traditional agricultural techniques. Along with profit farming and the increasing need for the global food security are expected to drive the market. Presently the market in Nigeria and Africa has not yet been established, which may be a huddle at first but after demonstration and completion of a prototype unit we may seek corporate partners to increase operations.

Objectives:

  1. To target the issue of food production in areas of unrest and war by deploying our growth units.
  2. To prove that the production of food can be done through soilless method of farming in Africa.
  3. To create job opportunities for farmers, women and individuals with disability as well as ensure increase income.

Our Mission

Our mission is to ensure the development of fully solar powered hydroponic production units. That are able to produce large yields of food crops and vegetables that will grow all year round. We want to ensure that every individual get the opportunity to experience their lives before losing it due to hunger.

Our Background

We consist of a team of three member each from different backgrounds but share one thing in common, which is we are all Africans that know or have witnessed some one lose their lives due to hunger. we are all currently in different Universities in the country working collaboratively on articulating a vision for a sustainable and affordable model of hydroponic agriculture. Although this is an ambitious and brand new project for all three of us we are fully dedicated to establishing it.
